Pioneer DV-717 stays in standy mode, did it die?

I have a problem with my old Pioneer DV-717. After noticing some image artefacts on my LCD TV I changed my SCART cable to see if it caused the problem. Well it didn't. But after changing the SCART cable from AV1 to 2 I did notice the artifacts were gone. Since the first SCART cable was a high quality one, I decided to use that one again. I disconnected the first one and first connected the other one. First to the DVD player and then to the TV. I noticed a bit of "leakedge" when I touched the chassis of the DVD with my elbow connecting it to the TV, but didn't give it any notice. I saw the DVD player was in standby mode and tried to start it up, but... nothing. The standby indicator just lights up when I push the On/OFF button. When I push Standby/start/eject on the remote or play and eject on the machine, the light will go off for a couple of seconds and then back on. It will not come out of standby mode. I have no mod chip in the small slot on the right side, the fuse is not defect and the machine doesn't smell burned or something in the inside. What could have happened? Can somebody help me, please? I sort of like the quality of this old machine and it was going to spend its last years in my bedroom setup. Or has it died on me already? Many thanks for your advice!

Try unplugging it for a minute or so, make sure the power switch is off, hold down STOP on the machine, switch on and see if it resets (I think this is the procedure). You will lose all your settings though.

Thanks, but that didn't work I'm afraid.

There is a known fault with the PSU on some models IIRC. It's probably going to be that and unfortunately probably not worth spending on. It's a shame as it was really well made and nicely designed. Mine had the odd lip sync bug but mostly good. If you've got an LCD TV then a DVD player with progressive scan component out or HDMI will be a nice visual upgrade.

Mine has developed exactly the same fault. The standby light is on,the fuse is okay but its dead. There is nothing on the display. It happened after i inserted a DVD, just went dead.
Damian, would it be possible to replace the PSU and how would you go about it. (or isn't it worth it).

To be honest I don't know.

Read about some PSU issues after upgrading mine several years ago to the Toshiba SD900e. I think there was a kit you could get to resolve the problem but doubt it'd be an easy job and possibly not worth it sadly.
