Teac DRL700 error message

Hi folks,
My Teac dvd player has become very temperamental lately and fails to play discs about 70% of the time. This is what happens.....

Insert disc, loading message, few seconds of whirring/ticking noises, disc fails to play and READ ERROR message is displayed.

Nothing in manual about this.

Any ideas?
