problems with philips DVP5980....any help ??

i recently bought one of these from richer sounds for £69.99 and was happy with it until about 4 days later.

i was watching a dvd with no problems, stopped it to watch a tv programme then went back to the dvd, except this time i had no sound at all (picture was fine)

thing is, i could understand this if i had been mucking about with the sound settings on the dvd player, but i had'nt, so no reason for the problem.

i rang richer sounds and explained my problem, and they told me to check that i had'nt hit a on the dvd player that might have disabled the sound ?

i checked and all the settings appeared to be ok, so as a last resort, i pressed "reset default settings"

i tried this, but nothing, still no sound

i've tried everything they suggested. and it looks like i'm going to have to take it back to the shop this saturday for them to test it out.

i've just got this feeling they'll connect it up and say that there's nothing wrong with it, so i want to exhaust all the possiblities, before returning it.

it was really easy to set up, pretty much plug and play, so its not as though i needed to change any of the original settings anyway, so no reason for me to change settings that might have caused this problem ?

anyone have any idea what the problem might be.......... i'm not technically minded so the problem might be obvious to others, and simple to fix.......tried all the troubleshooting tips in the instruction booklet too.

anyone help ?

Re: problems with philips DVP5980....any help ??

One of the biggest problems that we forget to check when something's wrong is to make sure that all cables are connected properly.

I bought a Toshiba HD-E1 last month. As soon as I connected it there was sound coming out (and it was good sound I tell you!). Plugged in another HD DVD to test the surround capabilities and there was no sound coming out at all! I almost thoguht it was because I change the sound to Dolby TrueHD!

You know what it was? The optical cable got unplugged by accident and it took me a day to figure that out.

Maybe I'm just stupid but check it anyway mate.

Check the audio setting page is set to PCM only and as above your cables are seated correctly. If you upgrade your firmware this happens sometimes, you have to physically unplug the player for 10mins before powering back up.

Here's the audio settings page at Phillips:-
http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/d...earchtxt=5980#
Once there check the troubleshooting 'no sound' link near the bottom of the page

Re: problems with philips DVP5980....any help ??

righto

have done all the checks you guys have suggested

i've checked the scart is housed correctly (not loose)

you also say that under the "audio settings" header,it should be set to "PCM only" (the only mention i can see of *pcm only* is the one in the menu *digital audio page* ....then sub menu *digital output*........so is this the one ?)

in the "digital audio page" (under the sub-heading "digital output" you have a choice of 3 settings, these are 1) OFF......2) ALL.........or 3) PCM ONLY

you say that you think it should be set to "pcm only"

its just that when i set all the settings back to the factory default, the "digital audio page" default was "ALL"....rather than....."PCM"

it's just that at no time in the 4 days it was working were the audio settings ever on "pcm only" because i hadn't changed any of the audio settings, therefore they were still on the factory default settings.

so, basically i've now tried both the default audio settings and the one you suggested (ie pcm only) and neither of them are workingfor me.

you also mention physically unpugging the player for 10 mins or so b4 powering it back up ?

i've tried that too, so now i've tried everything suggested, but still no dice.

surely, if everything is on its default settings, then there is no reason for it not to work ?

the annoying thing is i was watching a dvd with perfectly clear sound, stopped it for 30 mins, and then (without changing any of the sound settings) when i switched it back on, hey presto.......no sound, so what can cause it to develop a fault, when it was fine 30 minutes previously ?

so,it looks as though it's going back to the shop tomorrow morning to see what they say.

thanks for all your help anyway guys.

Re: problems with philips DVP5980....any help ??

Doesn't look good.

Was it only on DVD playback? How have you got the player connected?

The settings are slightly different for the 5980 and the 5960. But to get sound out of my 5960 when connected via HDMI only I have to set it to PCM only output.

If it was a DVD, then found this:-

If you want to enjoy DTS sound on the player, you will have to connect via Coaxial to a Multichannel Receiver or connect via HDMI to a HDMI Receiver.

Connecting via Coaxial to a multichannel receiver:

1. Press SETUP on the remote control. The system setup menu appears.
2. Press to select { Audio Setup Page }
3. Press to select { Digital Audio Setup }, then press
4. Press to select { Digital Output }, then press
5. Select { All } and press OK

Note: When using Coaxial output, HDMI Audio has to be set to { OFF }.

Connecting via HDMI to a HDMI Receiver:

1. Press SETUP on the remote control. The system setup menu appears.
2. Press to select { Audio Setup Page }
3. Press to select { Digital Audio Setup }, then press
4. Press to select { HDMI Audio Setup }, then press
5. Select { ON } and press OK

So it depends on your setup cos if you dont have DTS setup then the setting should be as follows:-

Press setup on the remote control of your DVP.
· Go to the Audio Setup icon with the button
· Press to select DIGITAL AUDIO SETUP and press
· Go to DIGITAL OUTPUT with the cursor buttons and press
· Go to PCM ONLY with and press OK to confirm
· Press setup to leave the menu.

Did you not ask them to test it in the shop to see if it was indeed faulty ?
