progressive scan via component v HDMI?

I have a Sony KDL46X2000 purchased for my birthday a few months back & now with SkyHD am in visual heaven. Wasn't over the moon with some of my DVD playback though (Denon DHT500SD all-in-one) so bought a second hand Pioneer DV989AVi which I'm now running through the Denon via Coax. Thanks to this forum everything is now awesome the Pio upscaling is fantastic almost as if my DVD collection has been transformed to HD! I know it hasn't but it's close enough for me for now. My question is why can I only have progressive scan via component? I'd hooked up the Denon to the TV via component before the Pio & was very impressed a lot of lines & blurred image had been dramatically improved particularly on my region 1 DVD's? Am I right in thinking if I connect the Pio to the TV via component I will lose the benefit of upscaling from it? I suppose I'm being greedy but hey we all want it all don't we?

Re: progressive scan via component v HDMI?

Through component you let the tv upscale the image. Some tvs actually have good upscaling chips that are better than the hdmi upscaling chips in dvd players. Just try and and you should make a judjement.

Re: progressive scan via component v HDMI?

HDMI is automatically Progressive (except when selecting 1080i) then the display will turn it to either 720p or 1080p depending on its native resolution.

Everything going into the TV that is not the native resolution is upscaled or downscaled by the TV. That includes scart connections.
