I have this DVD & i'm very happy with it.The pictures are beautiful + it has EZ VIEW which bumps up pictures to fill ur screen, nice touch.Remote seems a bit unresponsive tho & some movies skip/freeze on first viewing, it didnt like Fast & the Furious dts.Watched PROTEGE last night in dts & it looked & sounded awesome.Blue light on front is a bit bright as well. Over all tho i'm well happy with it.

Have you a 1080p Samsung?

If so you'd be better off waiting for the new Samsung 1080p7 player which is due out shortly, and will only cost a few £ more.

You also need to take into account that your TV will probably do as good a job of scaling (if not better) as the DVD Player.

You get what you pay for really with these budget players, as the scaling processors can't be that good at the price.

If you want to get the best out of your standard DVD collection, then you should really be looking at the Toshiba XE1 HD DVD Player which has the Reon Processor and can upscale ordinary DVD's to 1080p. You can get it for around £470 if you shop around.

Your current DVD Player (if you have one) will probably do just as good a job as the Samsung you are looking at buying, even though it doesn't have a built in scaler.

That doesn't sound too promising.

Could someone post a detailed review of the upscaling picture compared to component or scart. And how much of a difference you think there is.

Re: Samsung DVDHD870 DVD Player with Divx Playback

Well i've got mine hooked up to my Samsung LE32R73BD via HDMI and i'm more than impressed (my other player was my XBOX 360 and that was shocking) all in all I thought it was a good buy even tho I paid more for the HDMI cable then I did the player.

Well,
HDMI upscale do nicely though. Compare with Component it shows quite improvement on sharpness and details. I was test last night with Blade3, it do the best on 720p, more colorfull at 1080i but at its best at 720p, because seems more natural and more cinema both picture and sound. Component output at the other hand shows nice depends on your TV and Component Cable. I have MonsterCable ComponentVideo2, but internal upscale in my TV not good enough compare with the one inside DVD player. I used its free standard HDMI cables, but recently upgrade to PS3 HighSpeed HDMI 1.3a cable from Sony.

Re: Samsung DVDHD870 DVD Player with Divx Playback

One more thing,
Don't use for play DivX over 4000 bitrate or it will skip that session. So stick to use at Home Theater Profile that have maximum limit at 4000.

Re: Samsung DVDHD870 DVD Player with Divx Playback

Just got one of these. Very impressed with the picture on 1080i.
Remote is useless though. They may well have made it out of sponge.

Can anyone tell the difference between the RGB modes within the HDMI menu?

I discovered that you have to push the buttons lightly and briefly and it works fine.

I like the shape of the control. I must be odd.

Re: Samsung DVDHD870 DVD Player with Divx Playback

Happy with this player too, picturequality is much better with HDMI, my old player only had SCART.
720p upscaling makes no difference on my Panasonic 42PV70 plasma, probably the scaler in the Panny is just as good...

One problem though, when the player is turned off it seems to forget settings like DTS on/off and upscaling resolution.
I have to adjust them everytime again after turning on, am I missing something?
There seems to be no way to safe your settings???
