Best DVD Player around the 150-200 mark

Finally got rid of my Kiss DP 600 (terrible DVD/media player) and looking for a replacement DVD player. I'm mindful that Blue-Ray and HD means I will probably want to upgrade in about a years time (probably to a PS3 when it drops in price) so wondering how to fill the gap in the meantime ? Would like HDMI connectivity and upscaling ability to get the best out of my TV and ability to play DIVX and as many other formats as possible (hence the original purchase of the Kiss player) ? Will also be using the DVD player for music. Candidates are:

Oppo DV981
Denon 1930
Pioneer DV 400/600

Any suggestions ?

the oppo seems to get rave reviews while the denon has had some lyp sync issues but i hear the picture is good but i am sure it is more than the oppo. I bought the denon 1730 and am well pleased with this one and its only 115 pounds.

evans,
What TV are you using it with and did it replace a previous player and in what ways is it better?

Well thats a good question. I am using a DIST JVC tv about 4 years old. They have excellent scalers in them. They scale everything over 1200 lines interlaced, 1250i for PAL and 1500i for NTSC. So with this tv you can really tell if a dvd player is any good, i am also only 3 metres away from the set. So you can see all the imperfections if the dvd is badly mastered.

At first i was pleased but not overly impressed with the 1730 but after i switched cables the color and sharpness really impressed.

Re: Best DVD Player around the 150-200 mark

well the 1930 has the faroudja deinterlacing chip which was for quite a few years one of the best around. My old player has it and the picture quality is very good. The reason I went for the 1730 was the price difference was so much (100 pounds or more then) yet the picture quality is very similar. And i can compare my old player to this one. If you dont need SACD or dvd a playback i would get the 1730. Outstanding value IMHO,

I would go for Pioneer mate, never let me down. I have DV 393 i think for 5 years now and still going strong and bought DV 490 with HDMI output when i was away and only around £55 Checked Amazon, it's around £110 and not even multiregion.

Re: Best DVD Player around the 150-200 mark

I did fancy the 1930 but really happy with the 1730, up to now I would consider buying Denon again. The pioneer 490 of what i heard is a decent player for the money however its got the mediatek chip and it doesnt like PAL dvd's in some instances of what people say on here. The dv696 is better and doesnt suffer with PAL as it has the newer mediatek chip.

Question Re: Best DVD Player around the 150-200 mark

Hi,
I'm similarly interested in the best player for around the same price mark. I've narowed the choices down to the following:
Denon 1930
Cambridge Audio DVD89
Oppo 981 HD

Or the cheap option of a Denon 1730.

I've got very concerned reading the forums that the Denon 1930 has a serious lips ync issue if you get a problem. As I already have Toshiba 32WLT66 and a toshiba XS32 recorder which shows lipsync issue with recorded material on 576p then I have some serious doubts.

Any comments on the choice between the DVD89 or Oppo, or just going cheap and take the 1730?
Cheers
