Re: Phillips 5960 for £49.99 - worth it?

I guess members of this forum tend to look for quality over budget. That's not to say we all have money to burn, but a second hand bargain is often a better buy than a new budget machine. It's not a model that has been mentioned, so maybe it would pay to read through a few pages of posts and see what is being bought by members. Also it depends on the rest of your kit, so maybe it was a little vague. For example, does it have an hdmi port? Many people will be looking to buy HD ready tv's, or already own them and that might be important.

Sainsburys have it at 69.99, so it sounds a good deal, not a bad player by all accounts, where have you seen it at this price?

Re: Phillips 5960 for £49.99 - worth it?

Hi,
There are several threads already that go into great depth about the excellent capabilities of this player. HDMI, USB, Multi-Region, DivX etc etc
I rate this player as one of the best budget models available. Despite its budget price, IMO its performance is outstanding.
I was so impressed, I've now tried about 5 or 6 more expensive offerings just to try and better the budget model with absolutely no improvement, hence I still have the philips.
In my experience, ultimately the quality of your screen will have a far more significant effect on PQ.
When I used LCD, the difference between player performance was slightly more noticeable but since changing to plasma, the quality is simply breathtaking fairly regardless of which player its connected to

I was just about to buy this model from Laskys for £54.99.

Where did you see the player at this price?

Thanks for the replies people... I should have been a little more specific, my screen is a 32s2010 and I would be connecting over hdmi.

And the place i have seen it is infact Sainsburys, i have seen in the AV bargain section that they also have a hdmi cable for approx £2 too - which may or may not be any good.

Re: Phillips 5960 for £49.99 - worth it?

Hi

I too was looking for a decent dvd player as I am now sick of my temperamental Toshiba 340E being fussy about the kind of discs it will play/not play.

Can someone tell me if the Philips would output to and use my optical digital audio connection on my Toshiba 32ZP38? I use the Toshiba TVs built-in 5.1 Dolby system.

Also where is it at the £49 price? The best I have found is Laskys so far.

Cheers

Yes it is local in store, there is 6 or so of them. The 5960 was £69.99 until recently and is now £49.99, the 3 series is £39.99. Interestingly it is only £54 at Amazon.

Re: Phillips 5960 for £49.99 - worth it?

Bought one from Sainsbury's last night, along with 1.99 HDMI cable. Still need to buy the HD TV set , probably LC37XD1E, but I reckon you can't go wrong at this price. Reviews (CNET and others) seem fine. Acts as a stop gap until there is an affordable combined HDDVD/Blu-ray with decent upscaling for standard disks.
Set up and picture looks good with SD. USB port is 1.1 only, so hi res pictures load slowly. Have upgraded firmware (see Philips website) and have also made multi-region. Have yet to attach usb hard disk but I understand that this is a good way of creating a low cost video 'juke box'.
jsync - The answer is 'yes'.

I'm very tempted but my DVP5900 is still going strong. And plays everything I throw at it.

Set up pretty painless. But in the video settings it wont let me select Tv Type, it will not highlight that field. Anyone else had that problem?

Cheers

Re: Phillips 5960 for £49.99 - worth it?

what I want to know about this player (rather than starting a new thread ) is how it plays via and attached external hard drive or a USB stick, people say it is slow because of usb 1.1, so are people saying it doesnt play avi films well?

also, where is a link to the player for 50 sheets? Amazon has it for 63 at the moment.

Is one of PAL, Multi, or NTSC highlighted? My guess is that you are HDMI connected and it is automatically detected. Also, did you perform the firmware upgrade as per http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/d...05_fur_eng.pdf

This might not help, as my version was .34 and this appeared to cure the main issues. New version is .40

It loads the file and does not attempt to stream it.
Pop down your local Sainsbury's and pick it up for £49.99. THey are probably going fast.

The manual seems to say that only jpeg/mp3/wma files are supported but I had it playing a divX sample off a USB stick. I will check .avi for you later.

Will order one from Low as my local Sainsburys is rubbish when it comes to things like that.

It is the USB interface that interests me most as some people on here have said they have a large gb HDD attached and watch films via it.

I just bought one from Sainsburys for £49.99 - bargain.

Got it through HDMI to my Samsung LE32N73BDX and then from the Sammy optical audio out to my Yamaha VS-10 - only it's showing up as Pro Logic instead of Dolby Digital! Anyone got any idea why this would be? The 5960 has coaxial digital out only and the VS-10 has optical only - I kind of thought that I could do 5960 HDMI -> Samsung HDMI -> Samsung Optical Out -> Yamaha Optical In, but apparently not.

Do I HAVE to buy a coax to digital converter to get Dolby Digital / DTS from this setup?

Ta!

Sorry, being silly. The divX file was .avi and it was fine off the USB. Check the link to phunkyfish.com lower down this thread. Need to be careful of low power output on the USB port. Some Memory cards do not work. HDDs need to be powered up first before connection.

I think the firmware upgrade quoted earlier http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/d...05_fur_eng.pdf should do the trick.

This American AV forum has a discussion on the 5960 and the problem was solved with the upgrade http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...0&page=2&pp=30
