DVD - 10 years old this month

In March 1997, DVD was released in the USA, in certain cities only and with hardly any titles, no movies, I went to Florida and bought the Pioneer Elite laserdisc/DVD player combo and one DVD - IMAX, Lions of Africa.

Happy 10th Birthday DVD

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

Time passes quickly. My first DVD was Bladerunner Directors Cut (just re-released recently). US Import and the store had 10 titles in total. Must have been 1998...

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

Really ? Wow. My first DVD player was a mis-priced Creative DVD-ROM drive from PC World late 1997 - imports from DVD Empire and some purchases at Comp and Video Exchange in TCR. Then I bought a Panasonic region 1 player in Phoenix on a busy trip in April 1998. Never looked back really.

My first was 'The Matrix' and 'Blade', both bought at the same time, back in 2000 I think. How time passes quickly.....

My first was Bladrunner, dir.'s cut, too. And I am still waiting for the really nice remastered version.

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

Amazingly my first DVD was 'Lost In Translation' bought for me by my wife, with my first player, in 2004.

I hadn't been into AV before then

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

Ah, that long memory lane.

My first player was a prezzy from the wife, Wharfedale 750 (breezeblock) for the princely sum of £180. multi-regioned coz of better selection of import titles.

First disc was, of course, Matrix £14.99, recently payed that for the 10 disc complete set.

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

I started in 1999. My first DVD's were The Matrix, Bladerunner and Dune bought from a Candian company, and played on a region free Pioneer 626D I bought for what seemed a reasonable £400! In fact I only demoted it to the spare room last year when I bought the Denon 1920.

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

I started in 1999 with a £380 multiregion modded Pioneer DV-515 (Still going strong and now in my son's bedroom).

My 1st DVD was Batman.
I've now got a HD DVD player and my 1st disc is Batman Begins. And so the DVD addiction begins again

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

I started in 99 I think, with the superb dual disc Toshiba SD3109. Sold that a couple of years ago now but it still worked perfectly. Good old Toshiba!

My first disc was The Faculty. Pretty crappy, but I had bought the Tosh over Christmas, no discs, had the flu, so just rushed out quickly and bought the first DVD that I could find that interested me.

Watching a DVD for the first time, you can never relive that initial amazement at the picture and sound quality. Then watching VHS again, which I did for a couple of years afterwards and realising what crap we had all put up with for so long.

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

My first player was the Samsung DVD-709 bought in September 1999 for £200

Can't remember what my first disc was but remember the excitement when I got a Region 1 copy of The Matrix. Was gutted when it would'nt play due to some buggy firmware.

Once that got fixed the player still had issues with some discs so Currys (God bless 'em) swapped it out for a Pioneer 444 (Only got rid of it last month!)

Ahhhh, those were the days.

Got my HD-DVD player now and so it begins again!!!

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

My first player was a Pioneer 717, which was then sent away for a mutiregion mod. Huge by today's standards!

In a fit of excitment on getting the player (before the mod) i rushed into Rackhams (Birmingham) and eyed the limited selection of shiny new discs!

Left with Goldeneye, for the princely sum of £20.99!

Anyone remember the dreaded 'flipper' discs? (single layer disc with film split over two sides , and the 'format war' of DVD vs Divx...)

Halcyon days

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

My first player was the Panasonic A350; cost about £700 I think. I had to then buy the multi-region mod kit and mod it myself. Can't remember the first disc I bought, did buy Blade Runner - Directors Cut though, but used to have to search through a shelf of region 1 DVD's in a cupboard at a shop in Manchester; they were eventually raided and shut down for selling them. I eventually replaced it because the DVD Plunkett & Maclean wouldn't play on it.

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

I remember buying my Pioneer 515 Multiregion for £500.00 (£390.00 + £110.00 Multiregion Modification) in early 1999 and my first DVD as Enemy of the State, still got it.

The funny thing after buying the DVD player was walking into HMV and asking where their DVD's were, the shop assistant replied with "What's DVD?", priceless!!!!!

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

it was Jan 1999 for me, a pioneer DV-414, (us import) multi region player for me.
it is still going strong, in as new condition. never had so much as a peep out of it.

i had been on the phone to play, and ordered Blade, Lost in space (both R1) and Fallen(r2) before i had ordered the player.

what a time its been, on HD now, so my dvd movie buying days are pretty much over, just pick up TV shows now.

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

Pretty sure the matrix and Contact were my first discs. Played it on my PC's DVD rom which had a decoder card with it, and a remote control. Then i had to buy my 32" widescreeen, then upgrade to a SD100 thats still being used today as my main machine, then amp and speakers ,has it really been that long?

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

I brought myself a Pioneer 717 in December 98. The first DVDs I brought where Face Off & Sphere from Comets (the only local place that stocked DVD's!).
I then got the player region hacked and brought Blade R1 for, if I remember £25!, those where the days.

Re: DVD - 10 years old this month

My first DVD player was actually a PS2 - can't recall the year, but my first disc was Crouching Tiger as it was in a sale for about £10, my next DVD was Good Fellas Flipper DOH! Thing is I was amazed at the quality on the PS2, but looking back its wasn't brilliant and the fan noise was bad.

Since then I have had a budget Tosh component player, a free JVC player (came with a JVC CRT) and now a Samsung player - I have a feeling I will be moving on to HD/Blue Ray with the PS3 after the price comes down. DAMN TECHNOLOGY - MOVES TOO FAST

My first DVD was in my Dell PC. It was just a video of some people going down a river on a raft.

Like the good old laser disks.

Yes, Robocop is an example although later I exchanged it for the Verhoeven's approved uncut version single-sided.
Since then I started to appreciate the slight layer change instead of getting out of the couch
