HD ready 'panel' screen will always show at thei native resolution of the panel. It is upto you what you feed the. 1080i, 720, 576p, 576i etc

You are changing several things all at the same time and concluding upscaling and HDMI is the difference. I would say that it is more likely to be down to the poor quality of the analogue interface and the display deinterlacing properties.

a HD Ready display will upscale (and deinterlace where necessary) any compatible signal to fit the native resolution of the display, that could be a Blu ray HD signal or an low quality SD signal from a VHS deck.
Yo only need one upscaler, one good one. Today manufacturers prefer to sell you one in a DVD player, one in a receiver and one in a display and most of us fall for it....and manufacturers just make more money that way. Any one of these three solutions work fine, the trick is just to use you 'best' one you have access to, many are very similar however particularly if you just need to scale.
