I've experimented with Xvid playback on the Denon 1730 by encoding a few TV episodes and a film using the AutoGK encoder. Playback is great, but for one thing: thick black bars top and bottom of the picture.

The TV episode in question is from a 1.78:1 NTSC DVD source and encoded as a 349 Mb Xvid file, with a resolution of 640x360. When played back on the PC (VLC player), the aspect ration is correct and there are no borders. But when played through the Denon and a Sharp Acquos LC37-1XDE, the picture has thick black borders top and bottom and appears to be stretched horizontally.

Normal 1.78:1 DVD playback does not display the same borders.

Can anyone suggest settings (DVD or TV) for playback similar DivX/Xvid files?

hi, i have the same problem!!! it's really frustrating as dvds play fine- with the right aspect ratio (and bars if needed) but DivX files have amazingly thick black bars on the top and bottom!
can anyone help?

Hi, I think this is a problem with all up upscaling players I tried the new pany 53 and that had the same problem.

Anyone found a workaround for this yet ?

pioneer 600 and tosh 360 fill the screen and they are upscalers.

surely someone has an answer!
