BEST DVD Player for 50" Plasma AROUND 300£??

Hi everybody....

I have recently bought a Pioneer 507xd 50" Plasma and I'm very happy with it.

What is the best DVD player I can buy around 300£??

Only will use in HT, not music.

Thank all, Matthew.

Re: BEST DVD Player for 50" Plasma AROUND 300£??

I have 47" 1080p JVC LCD tv.
The best image I ever saw from a DVD player on a Hires plasma or DVD is from the Denon 2930, but it is more pricey at about £500
For only about £55 the Philips DVP5960 does a great job of upscaling DVD's.

However it is often personal preference so good luck with your choice

I'm in exactly the same boat, although my 507XD doesn't arrive till next week...

I was looking at the Oppo 981, although if there was something a lot better for around £300-£400 I'd get it. I'm a bit worried about Denon lip-sync issues so I tend to stear clear..

As you have posted in the STANDARD DVD players forum I will give you the following advice:

Does your plasma support 1080i or 1080p? If it is "i" then buy a Denon 2910 DVD player from this forum or fleabay second hand you won't touch it without spending upwards of £1K. If it supports 1080p buy the 2930 second hand. You could get a Denon 1930 for about 200 quid but it is a step down from the previous mentioned. Both will cost you around 300 quid.

You might want to consider the oppo 981 but I haven't seen one to compare although there are good reports on this forum for it.

However, if i were you I would look to get a Tosh HD DVD player (can't remember the model number but search the US AVforum). Its not a standard dvd player but apparently the upscaling of standard DVDs is brilliant (the US AVforums have tested it and the results are the best they have seen) and you also get the benefit of playing HD dvd's (which are fantastic BTW).

There you go some advice!

Re: BEST DVD Player for 50" Plasma AROUND 300£??

I'm in a similar situation having recently purchased a Panasonic TH50PX60 plasma (1080i) - it arrives tomorrow .

Given my current DVD player is an old Toshiba SD-220E, while it was fine with my old 25" CRT I'm thinking I'll benefit from an upgrade in this department! I'm thinking at about the same price point as you Matthew partially as I intend to go HD at some point but want to let the war settle down!

However your comment, hoppaz, has got me thinking - am I better off getting the entry-level Toshiba HD-DVD player even though the majority of discs will be SD for the near future???

The best HD-DVD player for under £300 is the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive at £120
Plug it into your media PC and off it goes.

Yes, but that assumes you've either got an XBox 360 or a Media PC in the front room! No intention of getting an XBox and the Media PC was replaced with a Showcenter - much prefer it!

Well I should have my 507XD and Oppo 981HD by next Tuesday, so i'll try and report asap

Only thing I have to compare with is FFDShow via my TV, or my Xbox 360 drive.

the E1 is a decent DVD player if you get over the slow boot time etc and lack of multiregionness. Also has the advantage of playng HD DVD bit over budget tho.

Re: BEST DVD Player for 50" Plasma AROUND 300£??

A good bet for a standard DVD player, would be a Denon DVD2910 and there is one on ebay at the moment for bang on £300.00 with £20.00 postage so only just over you're budget. I have one of the 2910's myself and it is a lovely machine and I doubt you will get much better for around the £300.00 mark. Hope this helps.
