'CD Direct' option on Sony DVP-NS905V?

Can someone please explain to me the function of the option 'CD Direct' on the Sony DVP-NS905V DVD player. It's not clear from the manual (page 78) exactly what this does.

The manual says that it eliminates unnecessary circuits needed to play CDs (fair enough) but it also says that it affects the Line Out L/R (Audio) jacks. Surely these jacks are needed to play audio CDs?

probably switches off the video circuitry? I'll have a look and check.
