Recommend a DVD player with Divx and AC3 support?

I have just recently discovered my Denon 1920 doesn't play AC3 audio.

Can anyone recommend a DVD player that also plays Divx, supports AC3, is multi-region-capable and has excellent performance on original DVD discs?

in saying "ac3" (a term which i confess is alien to me) i hope you mean mp3 or as scarty says dolby digital in which case have a look at the LG DVX 9900h. this is an upscaler dvd player with divx and dolby digital output (though this is co-axial not optical)-it also plays mp3/wma. yours for the princely sum of £70 (approximate price). this machine can also be modified to multi-region. if you decide on one mate e-mail me and i will give you instructions on how to do it.

OK I didn't realise that AC3 is another name for Dolby Digital. So yes I do need a player that can play divx with ac3 sound - I will check out the Sony thanks.

Re: Recommend a DVD player with Divx and AC3 support?

AC3, IIRC, stands for Audio Code 3, which was indeed the early term for Dolby Digital 5.1. The 1920 should be OK with that I would have thought.

It is on regular DVD discs but on a DivX movie with AC3 you get picture but no sound and much Googling etc. has let me know that the 1920 won't play AC3 with DivX.

I picked up a Sony NS76H though and that has had no problems with it or anything else I've thrown at it so I guess I will use that player now and keep the 1920 for the Region 1 stuff.

Thanks for your help guys.

Re: Recommend a DVD player with Divx and AC3 support?

Now this is the thing that is confusing me about the whole DivX/AC3 and in this case Sony Players. I have an LS785 which plays back DivX/AC3 with 192 kbps and 48000KHz. The DVD Recorder Sony GX220 plays only the audio as it says the Audio data is not supported.

Now what I normally do with avi files is to
a) Unpack them if packed
b) Change the FourCC Code to Divx if its XVid
c) Extract the Audio to AC3 using ffmpeg
d) Merge the new AC3 to the unpacked AVI (omitting the old audio track)
e) PLAY

Same procedure and the GX220 falls over as described above - Audio not supported.

I tried changing the settings on ffmpeg in the AC3 extraction to 44100 to no avail..then I thought..hang on...this player has no problem with DVDs (full MPEG2) both DTS and 5.1 ..AND...when I record from the TV Sat..it plays back WITH as it says Dolby Digital 2.0. So, I took a DVD-RW with some GX220 recorded stuff from the TV and loaded it on to the PC. Did a MediaInfo examination and saw...AC3 48000 KHz 256 kbps. Nothing strange or startling -except the 256kbps...Nah...couldn't be...Nope it wasn't - Tried that - still no result.

Delve deeper and look at the Audio Codec names...on the DVD full MPEG it is AC-3 DCM (Decompressed I presume) and the Divx file it is AC-3 ACM. The actual Codec IDs were the same (0x2000).

Still no further down the road as to 'not how to make it play' as to 'why the GX220 doesn't recognize a perfectly good AC3'
