Any issues with Denon 1730 DVD player ?

After owning various Denon DVD players, 2200, 2910 and family members owning other premium Denon machines. Can anybody inform me if the Denon 1730 has any issuses. ie: firmware or screen incompatibilty problems?
I'm thinking of getting one for my Nephew, to feed his Panasonic PW5 Plasma, via component.
He's got a Denon amp, so it would be nice to cosmetically match it.
But he's more than aware of the problems we've had with other Denon Players.
So... anybody?

I have had no problems with it so far (touch wood). Good results here over both component and HDMI (no perceivable difference really between the connections). I have tried a lot of discs with a nice picture, sound and no lip-sync issues at all and it has accepted both DVD R +/- discs. DivX playback seems fine although only briefly tried this when i first got it. What specific issues have you had on the higher end players ?

Re: Any issues with Denon 1730 DVD player ?

no issues at all, played all my dvd+R discs no problems, also region 4,2,1 plays everything. CD playback suberb, component playback is very good for the price.

Salesman at the shop where i bought it said to me that the older denons some of them had a fault with the lazer but not these.

For the price level i feel it is really worth it even if it only goes a few years!!

i bought one of these yesterday and it will be going back as doesn't play divx at all well and is much poorer quality in picture, features etc than the Pioneer 696 in my opinion

Its a load of bull...it, the player is great for the price, look at your options and I doubt you would find better. Of what i have read your looking at 500 pound machines to get better video.

It plays burnt dvd+R discs.

Must be good, What Hi Fi Sound and Vision crapped it.
Whatever they say I believe the opposite, as do all the other magazines.

Re: Any issues with Denon 1730 DVD player ?

yes it's a shame really, the internet should be a great way to suss out products but a lot of the time they are just set-ups.

Denon have always had a good reputation as far as I know

Re: Any issues with Denon 1730 DVD player ?

Dont know about dual layer discs, as i dont have a dual layer writer. I am glad i didnt get the pioneer 696 after all as I heard it has not so good component picture. The sony ns76 was my other choice but one guy had both and said the denon edged it slightly in pic quality.

Re: Any issues with Denon 1730 DVD player ?

...of the five review's i have read every one has been favourable, both on the net and in magazines apart from What Hi-fi.

These review's claim it to be the best sub £150 player. I was still unsure whether to buy it as i never trust media reviews.

I think i looked in the awards issue I bought (yes I know i am a hypocrit but was curious to see what their 'products of the year' list contained ). In the buyer's guide at the back I think it said no HDMI out and it doesn't play
+ discs .

Anyway i asked a few on these boards and they were happy so decided to buy and am very happy.

I too don't have a dual layer writer sorry...

the sony ns 76 has ***** component out too, crap deinterlacing almost as bad as the pioneer. this MAY or may not, be down to the fact sony seem to have revised(cheapened?) the player which now makes way more noise(the dvd drive is really noisy) then the first batch players did, i know this as my father had a fault with hdmi on his early version and was replaced with this noisy beast of a unit.

Can't comment on the component out, but I've just bought one and its silent in operation. If it's really that noisy then I'd say it faulty.

Although I find the Denon 1730 gives a better picture than the Sony, I can't subscibe to your comments.
I find the Sony very good on component and HDMI, and a very quiet runner.

For the money, I would recommend the Denon first and the Sony second.

yeah thats what i thought but both me and my dad ordered....me from multiregion magic, and him from empire as a replacement. they both had the same noisy drive a poor deinterlacing.

this deinterlacing problem is clear both on my panny plasma and my fathers sony brvia lcd.

so like i said it must be down to some kind of revision.......not to mention chroma bug.

Re: Any issues with Denon 1730 DVD player ?

Leads connected at both ends properly ? Tried a different HDMI lead ? Tried to see if scart is working ? Input selected on TV correctly ?

I don't mean to sound patronising as once it took me a while to get something working through my amp but in the end it was just a slightly loose coax

Just didn't think...

Re: Any issues with Denon 1730 DVD player ?

Just noticed something with this player. When i am playing dvd's with footage from my video camera and have progressive mode the quality is not that good. However when i change the settings and use component (I) interlaced the picture is stunning!! However on normal dvds the best viewing is component progressive (set to video)

I suppose it is because the footage is interlaced to begin with, no jaggies though just perfect. Very surprised as I thought progressive would be better with anything you play!.

tried everything you mentioned including scart. it works fine with scart. tried 3 different hdmi leads, tv input correct. tried the dvd with hdmi leads to a samsung tv of mine and works perfectly. on my LG lcd tv though ...nothing.

Re: Any issues with Denon 1730 DVD player ?

Just bought a 1730 and well pleased with the pic quality (component) also compared to my old Panasonic DVD player the audio sounds much better, no lip sync issues either. The only thing I don't like is the Zoom, X2/X4. My old Panasonic could zoom in small increments to fill the screen but the 1730 makes the picture to big and a lot of the picture is lost. I suppose I will have to get used to black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

congratulations on your purchase, yes the zoom function is stupid but why dont you do it through the tv to get rid of the bars, there are settings to get the full screen and you dont lose much from the sides. Unless your tv is very old.

Some people have found tht they have to enable the hdmi connection on their tv's through one of the setup menus.

Re: Any issues with Denon 1730 DVD player ?

I played a couple of DVDs last night, OPEN SEASON and TWIN TOWERS.
The pictures were sublime. So much so, I can't imagine how Blue Ray or HD-DVD can offer much better.
No lyp-sync issues either.

what TV have you got it hooked up to?

I would say blue ray will give better detail and no problems with mosquito noise non existant. I saw recently when i went to purchase my denon the guy at the shop had a jvc LCD 46 inch full HD and he was playing a tape from a HD video (yes!) player! The picture was so clear and amazing!

Panasonic 42PX60 Plasma.
You can see, on good HD material, an improvement from 5 feet away.

From 9 feet the differences all but disappear.
