Re: Helios x3000 down to £173.73

I was tempted to go direct but at $379 - $50 (using the 'WinterBlues' discount code) = $329 + postage = e.g. $345 (= £176)

However after reading their FAQ - I understood that import tax/duty would be charged upon arrival ()? So by my calculation adding 17.5% VAT & 5% duty (if correct) it's not so attractive - Or did I do my calculations wrong ?

Anyway - in the end I went with Superfi.co.uk (local) at £209 (they are knocking £20 off their RRP online, plus as it's local I felt it's better placed to deal with faults/warrenty etc.

This is what I was thinking, prices look good til you get stung for import duty etc. I take it you have one of these then ! I am between this and the Oppo 981 but like the fact that the Helios has streaming aswell. Do you rate it well as a dvd player.

Re: Helios x3000 down to £173.73

Sorry Owen 824 - The £209 was with the £20 off as it's usually £229 - I did eventually hear from Helios and it seems if you do order from the US it's shipped for a storage hub here in the UK (so maybe duty is saved - but I haven't asked as I've already parted with my cash?)

Anyway costs aside - for the record, I luv my Helios X3000; it's connected to a Pioneer plasma and looks great.

The supplied Helios Media Server software loads onto any PC easily, and although running HD content over wireless is not good, Vobs are totally fine.

Also I'm currently working on turning an old PC into a NAS (FreeNas) and load it up with movies - I'm almost there and it test so far so good (a whole media library via the X3000 at my finger tips :-)

Re: Helios x3000 down to £173.73

I didnt even know such device existed, but bl**dy hell do I want one! Just wish I had a spare £209. Guess it'll have to go on the shopping list under my new 5.1 speaker set up that is the next purchase!

Looks a very impressive unit, and love the streaming capability! <struggles to keep the credit card in the wallet>

Re: Helios x3000 down to £173.73

Also just noticed that there is a model above the X3000. Can anybody summarise the difference? They looked pretty similar in what they can do. Will the x5000 just do it better?

Parkerc,

Have you had any luck with this? Do ripped DVDs play back with full menu support?

Has anyone else given this a go?

Cheers,

Dave

Re: Helios x3000 down to £173.73

No menu problems on DVD playback and using a wired network results in higher bitrate capability. ie .ts, wma9 & divxHD with no problems. The DVD drive can be a bit noisy though but as I mostly play films from the PC anyway so that's not really a problem. Use WizdXP as the media server & you can play ISO's and IMG's in their native format - much quicker than waiting for the disk to write!

Re: Helios x3000 down to £173.73

Well for me the FREENAS and X3000 work great, although I do just store the IFO versions of the movies on the NAS, so there is no menus etc. other than the X3000s normal navigation.

To be honest I have not tried ISO or IMG etc. or any other versions, but I think the X3000 still needs a VOB to play.

There may be a way round it but I'm not sure as time has not allowed me to play around with it too much :-)
