Denon 3930 Scaling Abilities?

Would a Denon 3930 outperform my panny phd8's scaling quality?

What would would be the obvious picture quality benefits and would it be better to send the screen 720p or 1080p [screen scales down same as when playin hi-def material] would it be possible to achieve 1:1 pixel mapping with a hdmi-dvi adaptor?

A lot of questions I know but I would appreciate any help with answering the above questions.

I believe your plasma has 1024 X 768 resolution, and I think the Denon will output that, but needs checking. If it does then you should be able to achieve 1:1 mapping, since I believe your PHD8 is one of the few flatpanels which can bypass it's own scaler. I'm dubious to how much of an improvement you'll see scaling wise, but other aspects of this player seem to give it an excellent pq, from what I hear.

HTH,

T.

Re: Denon 3930 Scaling Abilities?

Hi

If it helps, I have this player and use it on a TH50PX600 panny plasma and the scaler on the DVD player is infinitely better than the panel's own one.

It gets me such a good picture that I am not bothering to jump onto the HD-DVD/BD bandwagon yet, honest.

I think it looks best on 720p for NTSC titles and 1080i on PAL ones and I use the Ycbr setting of HDMI.

Hope this helps!

thanks corrado.

What improvements in picture did you see at 720p compared to the panels scaler?

where did you buy yours from and how much did you pay if you don't mind me asking?

If its a 42" panel it's native res is 1024x768 IIRC. DVD is encoded at 720x480 NTSC or 720x576 PAL and any resolution above this is guessed by the scaler so the higher the res the less real imag exists in the total image. I would suggest trying both and seeing what looks best.

Does the Denon allow customer resolution output ? This is the only way you are likely to get 1:1 and then it may be limited to 60hz.

Re: Denon 3930 Scaling Abilities?

It might sound silly, but can the Denon 3930 upscale via component output?

No. It's just via DVI/HDMI.

The picture was just sharper and just less blotchy if that makes sense? Colours are extremely good too.

Got mine from Avland for £899 - am very pleased with it.
