Best DVD player for a Panasonic TH42PWD7

Aloha to all...

My Phillips 642 just died...and I'm in the market for a new player. I was hoping for some advice for a new player...I have some questions and I hope the experts here can help me out

1. Should I go for a more Professional player eg: DENON..MARANTZ..YAMAHA..etc..or a sony LG, phillips will do?

2. Is there any benefit from buying an Upscaling DVD player?

3. My Amp is the YAMAHA RXV 550..and it has no DVI or HDMI...is there any point of buying a DVD player with HDMI output

4. When I try playing WMV HD movies or HD content I download of the internet like "LOST" i used to get the error: RESOLUTION NOT SUPPORTED...what additional spec is needed to play that sort of content?

Thanks a lot..

Can anyone help please:

Is there ANY benefit form getting an "UPSCALING DVD player" bearing in mind that my panasonic TH42PWD7 plasma screen is SD and not HD?

Also...is there ANY benefit from getting a DVD player with HDMI output....and is there an OPTIONAL HDMI board for my TH42PWD7??

Any help would be greatly appreciared...My Philips DVP642 DVD player died and I need to get a new one ASAP!!

Thanks again...

Re: Best DVD player for a Panasonic TH42PWD7

I'm afraid if it's a SD TV, an upscaling DVD player wouldn't work. However, if the TV supports progressive scan (check manual) get a decent progressive scan DVD player (even one with HDMI output) and connect via component. It will output in 576p. If the TV is SD, then HDMI is a no-go as it is for HD resolutions ie 720 upwards.

Your HD content won't work unless you can get the output from the PC (I presume it's a PC) to match the TV. Try using Powerstrip (free download from the net, try googling it) to get the graphics card to adjust the resolution to one that matches the TV. Check your manual for supported resolutions. You'll find more info on Powerstrip etc in the HD Hardware and Entertainment PC's forums.

thanks for the info man..

Dont worry bout "Powerstrip".... i know what it is...I'm a computer tech junkie....

What I'm not very good at is understanding this Upscaling stuff...

Here's what i know...
My plasma is SD and ..yeah..it has progressive scan...i guess ALL plasmas do...

You say that an Upscaling DVD player would not even work with my screen??
And what if I got an HDMI board for the screen??

thanks..

Re: Best DVD player for a Panasonic TH42PWD7

An upscaling DVD player will work with your screen, provided you set it to output at a resolution the screen will accept (listed somewhere near the back of the manual). Whether it will give a better picture is another question, I've never used an upscaler with my PW6 so can't comment on that.

Might be worth a punt in the plasma forum, some of the old hands there will probably have an informed opinion on this.
