I have a DVP5960 and a Toshiba 26WLT66 to plug it into. Today I received an HDMI cable, and a high quality SCART cable for comparisons.

With HDMI, I noticed that when you switch the DVD on, the channel doesn't switch over to DVD automagically - is that to be expected? Is this something that only happens over SCART?

I also noticed that when you try upscaling sometimes you lose the sound, and you have to stop and start the DVD - anyone found that?

When ever I play a DVD over HDMI, the DVD player sets the scaling mode to Auto - can anyone tell me what mode it actually is using - the manual just says its the best available...and how do determine which mode you actually in? When you hit the upscale button it changes to the next mode.

(Almost) lastly, should I used 50hz or 60hz for each mode? Doesn't seem to make a difference.

Last (honest), what things should I look out for to really show the image is being upscaled? The differences I think I see between SCART and upscaled (720p and 1080i) and so slight I might be imagining them. Is there any definate difference? I've been using Toy Story 2 and Shrek 2 to do comparisons.

Firstly the player may need a firmware upgrade this also adds extra functions so i would start there as mine would not output dd or dts from the coaxial socket when hdmi was connected firmware fixed this.
Secondly the player will not send a signal to switch your tv via hdmi only scart anyone looking for a cheap upscaleing player should try this one the image is excellent @ 720p for the price and the coaxial output from this player is fantastic its better than my yamaha dvds1500

Do you know what mode "auto" uses when the player uses that? It seems to switch to auto each time you start the player, rather than the last selected mode (e.g. 720p).

not sure i dont think mine has auto i just went into the setup menu for hdmi and set it to 720p and it stays that way

I been having this problem from it too.. No DD/DTS with HDMI plugged in..
How do I upgrade the FW??
I got the FW from Philips site and extracted to BIN file but cant get it to burn. Every time it makes a coaster. Even openng the BIN with Alcohol120 hangs the PC.
How do I get the BIN to the player??

EDIT. Sorted it now, thought I needed to extract the BIN but just burnt the BIN direct to a CD and it upgraded ok.

Also in reply to the original question, I find the component with prog scan gives a better pic than the upscale for me.
