Blu-Ray or HD-DVD on Standard TV?

Hi
I know this is a really stupid question but i thought id ask anyway!

Will a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD work on a standard tv?

I know i wont see any picture improvement but my current DVD player seems to be on it's way out and so i thought i might as well go for one of the new formats. At least that way the movies i buy will be "future proof" so to speak.

Im guessing standard DVD's will work fine on a HD player and standard tv but what about HD content?

Thanks

Yes they will work, you should get a very slight picture quality improvement too, due to the higher bit rates etc. Your TV will need to be able to handle 60Hz though but that should be the vast majority of them.

ahhhh good news!

Thankyou

Yes my TV does support 60hz. I was actually looking at replacing it with that new Samsung 32" HD CRT as its only £499, but i have read some bad things about it on here

Even the print reviews in What Video and Home Cinema Choice are pretty scathing about it so it must be really bad.

One to avoid. Should be able to get a not totally-rubbish 32" LCD for £700 these days.

Is this really true? I didnt think the players could output 480i or 576i

Maybe if you have a prog scan TV it will work, but that vast majority of non-panel SD sets wont be.

All current and announced HD DVD and Blu-ray players still feature composite and S-video outputs which only carry 480i/576i signals.

It's not a stupid question and many others are probably in the same boat. To answer your question high def material will work on your standard def TV - even if your TV doesn't support high def input then you can downscale on the player.

And you should see an improvement in picture quality. Not so much in detail but the lack of artifacts. I hooked up my HD DVD XA1 upto my old PW7 standard def plasma and the pciture looked very good: like an extremely well mastered DVD.

- Have you got a link?

I haven't been able to find any of the press reviews so far myself.

I've read others here have had problems with theirs but there are more than a few like myself that are very happy with our sets.
I reckon my Ws32z419d is excellent at both SD & HD and was a total bargain.
