I personally owned the RDV 1060 and I had the RDV 1050 prior, so I know both players very well. The RDV 1060 was superior to the 1050 in terms of Picture for DVD-Video, because the chips and DACs of the 1060 are better than the 1050.
When it comes to DVD-A, I found both the 1050 and 1060 sounded basically the same. I know the 1050 or 1060 have excellent DVD-A in DVD-A, but as I stated earlier that the 1060 was superior In Picture ONLY.
Rotel, for the price and asthetics, is the biggest bang for the buck you could ever get..I am with you on that!!!!!
I had many problems with the 1060 ,as it has lots of problems, but that did not appear in the 1050 ,so I guess in that sense you picked the better one. I know from Rotel that the 1060 had many laser problems and other hickups that have caused many Rotelians to give up that player. Like I said before that I had NO problems with the 1050, but as also said before that the 1060 gives a better performance with regards to Picture in DVD-Video.
What you will be missing with the 1050 is SACD, and if that is not important to you, then stick with the 1050 because you will get wonderful DVD-A out of that player.
All I know is there are more titles out with SACD than with DVD-A, but that is a problem you will have to deal with.
I too prefer DVD-A sometimes over SACD, but with lack of DVD-A material in the market, makes you have to go for SACD, and by the way ,when you get a great SACD In DSD recordings, especially Multichannel such as a LINN SACD recording, you will fall In love with the dynamics of SACD.
I am a true believer in SACD Now after hearing LINN SACD recordings ,because before when I had the 1050 and 1060 I was an avid fan of DVD-A.
The Marantz DV 9600 gives you all the options I mentiones ,and YES this Universal player is better than most dedicated SACD and DVD-A players IN THE TOP END ,MIND YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers and Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
