Angry Fading colour problem with Marantz DV 9600

Hey Everybody,

I bought a new DVD player the Marantz DV 9600:

With Audio such as SACD, DVD-A and Redbook CD NO problems, even when I watch a Video In HT No problem with the sound. However after the player heats up for an hour or so watching a movie at 65Db the picture itself starts to fade like the colours start to wash out as if a veil is placed on the T.V.??

I thought it was a loose cable because the Audio was perfect, but it wasn't.
I also thought it was the overheating of the player as it is placed over my Processor ,so I put plastic separators ( between the Marantz and the Processor) so the Marantz is placed over the Processor, but has over an Inch of separation so in actuality it is not touching the Processor anymore ,but the problem still exists.
I thought it could be the laser allignment ,but I bought this player ONLY 2 months ago spanking NEW??

The picture fades and comes back and sometimes roles over, flickers ,however, you can hear perfect Audio and sometimes No picture at all. I thought the DVD had a scratch, but I had NO picture on Pause too. If I stop the player for a couple of minutes and go back to the section where I had NO picture the picture will actually appear and play normal again ,but after a few minutes the problem persists. I've tried this with a dozen DVDs.

Is it the overheating factor, or some cable that is loose or what?? I can't figure this problem out!! CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME OUT THERE!!!??
Thanks In advance!!

Re: Fading colour problem with Marantz DV 9600

It may be an overheating issue.

When I first played my DV7600, I noticed the DVD would randomly skip by a frame or two towards the end the film. The problem was only diagnosed after a marathon session of LoTR. It then occurred to me the DVD player was running warm.

The solution? I dropped the shelf down by one notch on my dual Oppli, leaving a good 2 inch gap above the player. I 've had no issues since.

It does sound like the player is overheating. The small separation space + the use of a plastic divider won't help very much, how about installing a small fan (such as one used for PCs) to draw away heat from both units? Inexpensive and will definitely work.

Angry Fading colour problem with Marantz DV 9600

At this point in time, In my set up and In my Music/HT room I cannot place the Marantz anywhere else, because it fits just exactly in the wood work cabinet built around my system, so I cannot put the Marantz player anywhere else unfortunately as ther is NO place whatsoever.
I am building a new house ,and will have perfect place for this player, but the house will not be finished for at least 9 months more, so I am stuck with the over heating problem if that is actually the cause.
Could it be something else besides the heat?? The cables are all tight, but there could be a short circuit, however, my dealer says that if it is the cable you would not hear any sound either?? Is he right??
Finally it could be a dud as you said. I had that same problem to some extent when I had the Rotel RDV 1060 where it will NOT fade, but I lose the picture but still maintain Audio. I returned that player to Rotel for a full refund as it was NEW too!!
What can I do Guys??
DO YOU THINK I HAVE DONE PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE MARANTZ PLAYER IF IT TURNS OUT TO BE THE OVER HEATING ISSUE???? If it is permanent damage then a fan won't serve me anything, however, if it is reversible and just does that when it over heats but will not cause permanent damage then yes Italo you are right I would have to get a Fan pronto!!!!!!!
Any more help out there.
Thanks In advance,
Chinets

Unless the player has been operated in out of spec conditions (assuming it's heat causing the problems) over a very long period of time, then no component should have been permanently damaged, otherwise you'd get the issue right from the get go. Electronic components have a finite range of temperatures they'll happily operate in, if you exceed that temperature range then all sort of abnormal operations occurs. I would install either a fan, some form of ventilation and/or cooling ASAP, then test the player again at a similar running time to try and reproduce the problem.

Another idea to cool the player to test out the heat hypothesis, is to buy one of those cool packs you use for knee injuries etc... just make sure you use the appropriate cotton cover. I use one of these to cool my LCD projector (I place it on top of the unit) during use as it gets rather warm even with the fan on 'normal' setting. If the problem disappears then you'll know what the issue is and can reorganize your setup accordingly. If it reoccurs then you'll know that the problem is mechanical and needs expert attention but, at a guess, a fan/cooling should sort the issue.

Let us know how you go.

Re: Fading colour problem with Marantz DV 9600

For testing purposes, can you not just take the DV9600 out of your cabinet? Place it on the floor or on top of the cabinet whilst you play a few dvds and see if the problem still persists.

Angry Fading colour problem with Marantz DV 9600

Dear Craig and Italo, and Everyone else:
Thanks guys for all your kind and warm help here!!
I have decided to add 2 fans tonight which my dealer will install tonight. I will also try another alternative, which Is to put my Sony DVD Player which is on top of my Marantz, which like wise is on top of my processor. I will Install that Sony player in between the Marantz and the Processor, so it will be sandwiched in between these two valuable gear and end up being melted cheese for the sandwich, but at least it will be a cool buffer between the Marantz and the Processor, as I never turn the Sony on ,only when I need it for back up In case the Marantz can't play a copy that I have borrowed or so.
I think this small buffer zone will cool the Marantz and my processor quite well as it will be in between both these gear.
I cannot put the Marantz on the floor because the 6 SACD and DVD-A cables for Analog are 1 meter long only, and the floor is around 2 meters down, so that would be imposible to do, plus the gear is installed in the cabinet and extremely hard to pull out, as it is custom made and fit for that cabinet.
Anyway I will let you know what has occured when I do these few changes and see the result. Hopefully this will solve it.
Thanks again for all your kind help and support guys,
I deeply appreciate all your wonderful and kind help.
Cheers,
Chinets

Smile Fading colour problem with Marantz DV 9600

WGLOVER,
Thanks, and will keep you posted on all of this.

The Sony buffer idea did not work, because the body of the Sony is way samller than the Marantz, so there was no way I could put the Marantz player over the Sony.

I am having the 2 fans installed today, and will have( 2 ) 220V fans plugged into 110V voltage ,so that the revolutions slow down ,and will give very little noise according to my dealer?? Snake oil or not I will have to do that today.

I will give you all feed back once this problem is solved.

Thanks again for all your kind and warm help.
Cheers for Now!!

Thumbs up Re: Fading colour problem with Marantz DV 9600

The 2 FANS helped a lot ,and I haven't had that problem again.

The idea of the SONY buffer zone did not work at all!!!

DV 9600 is very picky with copy DVDs, but with originals it's a WIZ do you agree or had that problem????

Cheers!!

P.S. Any other ideas of what caused my problem?????
