best reasonably priced pal prog scan player???

As the title suggests i'm looking for the best standard def pal prog scan dvd player to output to my new projector (Tosh MT400 so PAL prog scan is all i need).

I don't want good upscaling or anything else like that. I'll be getting a proper hi def source once they're mainstream in europe, and i can afford a better projector to watch it on.

All i want is dvd good at deinterlacing as i have my doubts about the tosh's abilities.

I'm also open to the idea of upgrading my reciever if there is such a thing as one that has built in deinterlacers for reasonable price.

Re: best reasonably priced pal prog scan player???

I was looking at £150 absolute max. It will after all (hopefully) get replaced when the european HD-DVD units are available.

To be honest i've been looking at teh likes of the Tosh 360E, seems to always be a good performer and is a steal at £60 but just wanted to get other peoples opinions

I got a Lafayette from BigPockets for about £45 and it does PAL and NTSC Progressive and on my 19" LCD it looked great plus it is multi-region and can do Divx.

I suggest you look at the 360E thread on which people have reported problems with this machine before you make a decision. I experienced them and swapped it for a Sony NS76H which is better in every way.

Does this model progressive scan both Pal and NTSC discs? I also see it has HDMi interface and upscaler is this better than prog scan as we have a JVC 32DS6 LCD TV?

Thanks

Tom

The NS76H has progressive scan on both PAL and NTSC component outputs. The HDMI output gives such excellent results with my projector that I haven't bothered to do a comparison with component - in theory, as HDMI avoids conversion to and from digital it should give better results. This can't be guaranteed though as in some cases the digital input circuitry is inferior to that for component input.

Re: best reasonably priced pal prog scan player???

Have the Sony 76 here and for the price it's stunning! Had it a while now and it's never let me down. Forget the other comparatively priced units cos they have bad flaws. Even the more expensive Sony upscaler has a flaw (or two). If you are going ~ £150 and up then sure there are probably better players (oppo, denon etc) but again... flaws have been reported.

The Sony76 does have one flaw related to DivX playback which for many people is a non-issue (me included), but it's worth noting before buying.
