DVD Player to accompany Pioneer 436 XDE

Hi everyone,

Firstly apologies if this thread contains some similar info to another thread of mine on the Oppo 971H but I thought it better to open a new discussion as I would like to broaden the subject!

I have a Pioneer 436XDE 43" Plasma (With HDCP HDMI) that I'm really happy with, now I would like a DVD player that will allow it to flex it's muscles a bit!

Budget, probably upto about £300 depending on how 'good' the example is.

What's confusing me is some people recommend upscalers such as the Oppo 971H and some say that it's better to run an interlaced picture and let the scaler in the TV do it's magic. With my Pioneer what am I best to do? I understand the new Oppo 970 (Sorry if the model number wrong) oututs interlaced signals over HDMI so that the scaling/prog scanning can be done in the TV/Scaler.

With my Pioneer 436 what am I best to do-

1)Upscaling DVD Player such as the Oppo 971H/Denon 1920 set to 720p (I imagine 1080i is a little overkill!)

2)Non-upscaled picture such as the Oppo 970H (Don't know any other examples) and let the 436 make the best picture it can.

3)Other (To be recommended by all you experts on here!!!)

ps. currently I have a Cambridge DVD85 running through Monster component cables and performing progressive scan (That will be relegated to a bedroom DVD Player as a result of this upgrade.

oh and by the way I don't care about DivX as I have an XBOX running XBMC and will carry on using that for DivX/Xvid

Look forward to reading all your opinions!!

Sounds good

Just not sure whether I can afford the 2910, £400 is a little out of budget, maybe they'll come down as the 2930 is due in a few months and some retailers may sell off old stock.

Anyone else have any other ideas

Possibly..but remember that this is a £600 machine and the build quality, performance is all refleecte in the value...

Good luck with your search....

All the reviews are stunning but I just don't think I can stretch that far

Also the drive to Shrewsbury from London isn't too appealing to pick it up

Main reason on the cash front is i'm also looking at getting a small (23-26") LCD for my bedroom, couple that with a 2910 and i'm looking at quite a large bill!

Any other ideas always greatly appreciated!

Hey thanks for starting this thread Dan! After 3 weeks of head scratching i'm still no closer to finding player to match with my pio.

Its a HDMI player i really need badly as SkyHD has tied up my component inputs indefinitely and so either i have to cable swap to watch dvd's or use scart!

A friend of mine has a denon 2910 and it really is fantastic but i couldnt spend £400 on a standard def player when HDDVD is practically here.

I've almost bought a Denon 1920 but then heard about its problems. Then i almost bought a Sony NS92- until someone told me about its picture shift! Now i was just about ready to buy an oppo 971 and i've learnt its a bit funny with some media which i definetly dont need as i've got alot of stuff on DVD+R!

Sooooo i've come full circle and am looking at the 1920 again. I think i read somewhere that it outperforms the Oppo (could someone varify this?) so if i can find this for ~£150 second hand I may well go for it.

I'm in the same boat, I'd love a 2910 but can't justify the £400 (and the drive to Shrewsbury which is a good 4 hour round trip for me!!)

The Denon 1920 is tempting but the replacement is only a few months away (Hopefully) and maybe Denon will fix the problems people have reported.

As for the Oppo 971H, again i'm tempted and it uses the Faroudja DCDi, same as the 2910, i'm not too bothered about it being fussy with media or DivX as 90% of my DVD's are original region2 discs and I have a modded XBOX with XBMC for my DivX/XVID's. However the idea of a lipsync problem really puts me off as i'm fussy about things like that, if it did have that problem it'd wind up on eBay pretty quick!

Maybe wait and see what Denon have in store with their new product line in August/September?

I'm really don't know what to do, i'd rather not spend more than £300 with HD round the corner (Hopefully not too long for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray to slug it out) but i really want a player to do justice to my £2000 TV!

That'll be the 2910 then......

Personally HD DVD and BR will take sometime to settle in IMHO....there is very little media at the moment and until one of the new formats become the dominant force there will be a touch of deja vu......

I agree also, generation 1 is probably work skipping out (ie. DVD before prog scan over component)

I can't see me taking the plunge for at least 2 years with the speed of things at the moment, I'll wait for the first wave of technology to go down in price and then the new (Like prog-scan a few years ago) technology come in.

At least thats the plan at the moment (Could all change by tomorrow, you know what its like )
