150£ best upscale dvd player

My budget is 150-170£. I want a DVD player to upscale at 720p at least and plays DivX movies.
Any suggestions?

That's pretty much your only option at that price point, the oppo has everything else beat unless you spend a fair bit more.

I believe your question has been answered. Mind you: you will also have constant firmware updates and excellent customer service for the money.

I don't use my oppo 971 for DivX so can't comment on that, I'd advice you to do a search on the oppo 971 thread.

Thanks guys
I don't want to spend more money this period. I think also Oppo is a good choice. What about Pioneer 696? Because of the lip sync oppo faced before...

Go for the Toshiba SD-360E or the Samsung DVD-HD950. They're the best value for money upscaling players for those on a budget, imo.

IT supplies have no longer have stocks of the Oppo. There's a thread regarding it somewhere.

Oppos have continued to be available from CRT projectors. It is the best DVD player in this class by some way, don't know how the DiVx thing is though as I don't use this 'format'. My Samsung 950 is a real turkey in comparison.

What about Toshiba 360 or Samsung 860? Which one is better?

If I had to choose from those I would probably go with the Samsung based on the previous Tosh model's problems. The Sammy has some reported faults too (look in the players individual threads).

Me, I got a Sony 76 (even cheaper) and it is a solid little player, much underated and so far, no problems from any users ('cept maybe some divx issues). Note I don't mean the more expensive Sony 9X model (which itself has some issues).

I would suggest you take some well known DVDs to a store and ask to check out the lower end players (Sony, Tosh and Sammy) if they have them to see for yourself, the PQ may not be vastly different under casual circumstances and therefore the reliability of the Sony model may be a better bet.

If you are a after more "respected" players then you should be looking at the Oppo or the Denon and above. Bear in mind these players (well, the Denon 1920 anyhow) also has "Issues" (read the threads). Just a warning.

What exactly are the issues with divx on the Sony? I haven't really bothered with divx stuff yet but it would be nice to know what the problems are before it's too late!

Cheers,
Andy.

Thanks Sharpfish.
I don't want to spend more money this period. Next year I will buy probably a new HD player. Sony 76 plays all the divx movies without a problem? What about the subtitles?
