Hi sdb,
Will it be better than the Denon 1910 I have now. I have posted in the 7200 thread about a problem which appears to macroblocking. I am getting a lot of pixelation in dark areas and it appears to be the dvd player which is causing it.

But I dont want to spend £164 only to find I have the same problem!!

Cheers
Dave

Also, some people have suggested that because it lacks 2:2 cadence it is not as good with PAL as it is with NTSC??

well, I only used PAL disks with my Oppo and they've been fine IME. I can't say whether it would be better than the 1910, only you could say that.

Oh, and one other thing

Has the lip sync issue been sorted. And does it work straight out of box with R2 or does it need a hack.

Thanks Steve

I checked the OPPO website and the comparison shows that the 971 supports 2:2 pulldown for PAl movie discs but not the 970.

Do you have the 970 or the 971? Its the 970 that is not supposed to like PAL discs...

I want to get the 970 so as to be free of MB issues and only have a 43" display (for the moment....) and ppl say I wont see much difference in PQ between these two at 7-8 feet anyway.

Hi Britboy,

I was looking at the 970 as it has a HDMI output for my bedroom system. I e-mailed Oppo and they told me that the 2:2 cadence issue was unlikely to be resolved by firmware. I would steer clear unless your DVD collection is region 1. I have read on avsforums that playing PAL discs is no-where near the quality of NTSC, so I quickly forgot about the idea.

In terms of comparisons to the 1910 I do not think you will see any real improvement with the Oppo.

Cheers

Thanks PSD,
With the 1910 I am getting pretty bad blocking on some dark scenes which ruins the film, so I am trying to find a player which eliminates the problem.
I notice you have the 1920, do you ever experience bad pixelation with dark scenes on your hitachi (I have the 7200)

Cheers
Dave

Any player with Faroudja 23xx will have some MB issues, however it's visibilty is often down to other equiment in the chain. I don't see it with my stuff on the 971 but I know it is there.

So what good quality players do not have the Faroudja chip?
Talking of a budget of £200-£250

Well, we're talking digital here, so as others have pointed out elsewhere, sky high priced cables are a con. My Oppo came with a DVI-HDMI cable which fits my Panasonic HDMI i/ps well and works with no probs. It's gold plated too, not that that is incredibly significant!

I would buy the Oppo and accept it's faults are not as bad as faults of other players in this price bracket.

Hi Dave,

No not really on the 9700. Ever so slightly up close but it is not visible from normal viewing distances.

Thanks for that PSD.

After giving it some thought, I reckon I would probably be better looking at some of the mid range priced players. I watch a lot of DVDs and now have a HD ready TV so why comprimise the whole system with a budget player.

So I may start looking at something like the Marantz, the Arcam is a little out my range

Would I see a benefit from something like the Marantz or would it be a case of a fool and his money

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave,

I had the Oppo until it got smashed in my house move!! I am afraid to say that side by side the 1920 is far better IMO. I would look at the Marantz line, if you check out the trading forums you might pick up a 7600 for a good price. That said HD-DVD is around the corner, do you want to spend £400 on a standard DVD player??!!!

Cheers

I have a thing about 1st generation stuff, especially when they have not decided on a format. I will get a HD DVD eventually but I think I will let that particular market get settled first and then buy. In the mean time a good quality SD is fine.
