Just bought an Oppo 971H...will I be happy...?

As title really, it hasn't arrived yet, hopefully be coming tomorrow...

Anyway I'm kinda salivating here as I've never seen a dvd upscaled and this thing meant to be the dogs dangles right?

I'm also interested in its CD playback, whats it like compared to other dvd players in this range.

I've got a dedicated NAD bee cd player but not much room at the mo so I'm not too fussed, just curious.

I understand the component output on the Oppo is terrible quality, right? Anyways I'm gonna be using the DVI-HDMI lead that comes with it, is it a good quality lead or will I need to buy another? Are there any quality issues converting from DVI-HDMI.

It will be connected to a 42inch Hitachi 6600 for the next few days (Got an exchange from richer sounds due to them all being recalled by them).

Will then be connected to a 50 inch LG PX4D...

I've read reviews and they say the LG screen "has some noise when using the HDMI"...

Anyone here with this plasma?

What did you think about the "noise" is it very apparent...

Ummm, well would really appreciate some answers to the above, also what should I output in when upscaling, 720p\1080i?

The res of the LG is 1366x768?

thanks very much

Rob

it will be the same as if playing throuh an xbox 360, if it upscales they are really all the same unless uv spent mega money, its the vidoe processor that makes the differnce

The 360 only upscales over VGA, I'm using the component hd cable (plays in 576p)

Anyone else

(thanks for replying tho, just need some real answers, hope that doesn't sound rude)

Thanks to you both for posting

I should have said, I realise the cd playback won't be up to the NAD i got, that cost £150 alone so no surprise there

I forgot to mention that it will be replacing a Pioneer 575

CD playback was pretty good on that, but nothing on the NAD, not that much detail and you couldn't "feel the timing" if that makes sense just wondering if you can "feel the timing" on this Oppo...hope that makes sense.

with a good cd player, you can almost feel the music as if its goin up and down a hill...lol i sound mental.

I would say that the Oppo will beat the 360 hands down for upscaling ability, considering it uses one of the foremost chipsets available (Faroudja DCDi).

I can't comment specifically about your screen Rob, but my Sharp LCD is also 1366x768 and i get the best image with the Oppo outputing 720p, you'll just have to tinker and see which setting gives you the best result in your eyes.

There should be no quality issues in converting from DVI to HDMI as HDMI is just DVI with a different shaped plug, and it adds the ability to send Audio over the same connection, but only with an HDMI to HDMI connection. The lead that comes with the Oppo is very capable, most people who have bought it have been happy to use the bundled cable.

Any other questions ask away in the Oppo Thread

I have both the 575 and the Oppo. On newer material I like the crisper Oppo picture but on older material the 575 is more "forgiving". They are both fine machines though.
CD-wise I tend to use the 575 but from what I've heard there's not much between them. I tend to use the AV amp to do the D->A anyway.
