Marantz7600 - Down mix?

Have just installed a new Marantz 7600. Have connected optical digital out to Amp (Arcam AVR350) as well as the 6 phone analogues for DVD-A.

Problem is this: playing my favourite test DVD, The Incredibles, I consistently get "down mix" noted in the DVD players display. From the manual this suggests that the player is down mixing audio to two channel stereo. Am I missing 5.1. Rear speakers seem to have some audio coming out - but not a whole lot. Any suggestions to get rid of "down mix". Tried everything in Set Up menus that I can think of.

[Also when I run the THX audio set-up that's on the same DVD I don't get any output from rear speakers. But when I do the Arcam amps own sound test I get full output from all 5.1 speakers......]

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Bryan

do you have digital audio setup for bitstream ? (otherwise your dvd is downmixing 5.1 to stereo and outputting as PCM)
Another question is: are you using correct input selection on your Amp ?
For dvd make sure that you assing digital connection in yor amp setup for DVD playing. You can use DV7600 decoders as well to the job then you must use 6.1 input (unless your amp have the option to assing 6.1 to analog DVD input then you just switch analog>digital )on your amp and chose 5.1 audio output on your DVD player

Thanks.

Just discovered problem. On HDMI part of DVD player set-up, need to switch off audio (the Arcam doesn't handle audio on HDMI) - so that it is output on the optical connection.

Sound soooooooo much better now.
