Get the originals down from the loft and put in a cupboard away from the kids. You will never improve a back up as it compressed to fit the disk so you lose the quality.

your best bet and also probably the cheapest is a home theatre computer. This will upscale anything to whatever you want and using a program like ffdshow will sharpen and enhance your dvd images. Also pretty future proof as you can replace the dvd player at a later date with a blue-ray or hd-dvd player whichever wins the format war.

to see what ffdshow can do go here: http://www.htpcnews.com/index.php?op...=132&Itemid=48

lots of home theatre computer info here: http://www.htpcnews.com/index.php?op...=132&Itemid=48

you may even be able to use your current pc if it s powerfull enough, and ffdshow is actually free!
