What is DSD and isn't it the same as SACD??? HDCD does not light up on Rotel 1098?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Everyone,
I found CDs that say Telerac DSD format or simply a DSD CD. What is DSD besides Direct streaming?? I though that DSD meant that it is a SACD CD format?? Am I wrong?? So what is the difference between DSD and SACD??
Also My Rotel Processor 1098 does not Indicate with a light or any indication that I am palying HDCD on my Rotel TCD-1072. Why?? The RCD 1072 has a red light that turns on when you play an HDCD CD but the processor 1098 does not indicate anyhting ( Light or anything). Am I receiving a true HDCD signal from my 1098 processor in HDCD or not?? I can't tell!!!!!!!!!!!! If there is no indication on my processor, except from my CD player 1072 that I am playing HDCD, then how would I know if my processor is really actually playing my 1072 in HDCD??Hope that explains things.
Thanks in advance for all your help,
Chinets

Well, I'm not sure, but, assuming you mean Telarc DSD, I think this means they mastered the recording in DSD (Direct Stream Digital) which is the bit-stream format directly encoded on SACDs. However, in this case, apparently, all Telarc's original DSD recordings are directly down-converted to produce the CD master, using a special process called "SBM Direct". So, DSD is the format used directly on SACD, but the DSD master can be down-converted to PCM format for regular CDs.

Considering the DSD stream will have been doubtless created from a PCM one in the first place, it seems to be an utter waste of time going from PCM>DSD>PCM.
Why bother?
Especially considering the monstrous noise shaping required to make DSD listenable.
All there is above 23KHz in SACD is noise, and lots & lots of it.
