720p better than 1080p

so Ive connected my upscaling Classe DVD to a Sony Ruby PJ. Ive used an HDMI cable and set the DVD to 'auto' resolution. The Sony now tells me its receiving 720p. I then 'force' the DVD to 1080 and voila...no improvement in picture. If anything very slightly degraded. Problem or correct-comments please.

Depends on the Native resolution of your projector if its 720p 1280-720 pixels then you get 1 to 1 pixel mapping by outputting 720p from your DVD.

The ruby is 1080p native but all this is from DVD sources, I would really not expect huge differences, small only at best. Personally I would set all to 1080p but the difference will be small. You should see an improvement with the Ruby run on the 24Hz SF stuff but I am not sure if the Classe does this.

yes thats correect the Ruby's native resolution is 1920 x 1080. Ive 'forced' it to 576p and found some improvement over 720p though!

That seems consistent with the processes. It avoids one scaling stage in the player.

No use one scaler operation and use the best one you have access to. That is either in the Classe or in the Sony, but probably not both, you will find that out by testing. A better way again is SF24Hz from a VP. Personally unless I am using a separate VP I stick with 480p / 576p and let the display do the scaling but many people have issues feeding a true 1080p displays with 'lowly' 480p / 576p despite the fact it might be a better way to do it.

and indeed as my testing confirms (to my eyes anyway) the 1080p feed is inferior to the 576p feed -from the Classe, to the 1080p Ruby. Go figure!

From what you've said there is only one conclusion, the scaler built into the projector is better than the one built into the player.
