High end player ??

Hi

Im new to home theatre and looking to buy a panny phd8 and possibly a yamaha 2600 amp. I was wondering do you really need a high end dvd player to make the most out of this kit ? The guy in the shop today said i would be better getting a £600 + dvd player to go with the amp and recommended the yamaha s2500. Would i see a great deal of difference in say that sort of priced player as opposed to a £200/300 priced one. Obviously i would expect the more expensive one to be better but is it £400/500 better. I know i will need to demo but would be interested in input. Also is the S2500 a decent player or would there be better recommendations in the same price bracket.

Thanks

Theres all sorts of theories on how much to spend on each component but I have always gone with spending roughly the same on each component, possibly slightly more on the speakers.

At the moment I have a matched pair, Pioneer 2011 amp & 757 DVD, Previosuly Yammy Amp & Panasonic DVD. Going for a yammy DVD might be the answer? The best advice I can give is try it out first. If you are buying it all from the same place then I'm sure they'll be happy to rig it up for you to have a play with. Use the forums, reviews and other peopls recomendations to create a shortlist and price guide but in the end there is no substitue for audtioning the kit because everyone has their own preferences.

Apologies I dont have any experince with the Yammy DVD you mention but a quick search of the forums here should give you some info.

If I was going to spend that sort of money I'd look at the new Toshiba HD-DVD players to be honest. I really don't think it's justifiable spending that amount of money on an SD dvd player when HD-DVD players are available for less and apparently do a pretty good job at upscaling dvds anyway. Granted the US players will only play R1 dvds which may or may not be an issue but something to bear in mind...
