Marantz DV6600

I managed to get to my local dealer and test one of these on divx.

The results were very disappointing and probably show all the problems the Denon 1920 does as the player uses the same chip.

First off no AC3 support, films encoded in dolby digital play back with no sound.

Secondly divx plays in a very small window, huge borders top and bottom and small borders left and right.

Thirdly very jerky playback, I have no idea whether the film I tried had packed bitstream but I doubt it as it played back flawlessy on my Pio 575.

Also it wouldn't play back a DVD+R but did play +RW.

All in all very disappointing so I'll keep my 575 until something else, maybe the new Pio 696, comes out.

If all you're interested in is DIVX support why bother getting a new DVD player at all, why not just stick with a HTPC? How about just encoding your DIVX files to a video DVD?

No standalone player is going to be fully compatible with these oddball PC compression codecs and frankly I'm surprised 'you' are surprised.

That's a bit harsh. These players are sold on the promise of being compatible. Nowhere in my 1920 manual does it say that 75% of all modern DIVX files will simply have no sound and therefore be useless, nor does it say 30% of my viewing screen will be lost, nor does it say many files will play back jerky. Denon are a disgrace for putting out such shoddy compatibility when it is not a problem at all for many other players, many of which are older and cheaper. It's simply not good enough and if you think it's fine to sell a product under these false claims then you are a strange breed indeed.

But DivX is an evolving "format". Your DVD player may have played DivX from 2 years ago but DivX keeps moving forward and unless Denon supply "patches" for the latest version of DviX you may be better off with an HTPC.

Well actually my Pioneer 575 plays 99% of all divx I throw at it, the disks I checked on the Marantz played fine on the Pioneer so "....divx moving forward" doesn't enter into it. I would like to upgrade the sound and picture quality on normal DVD playback but still keep all disk type and divx playback.

I totally agree with everything Jeffers01 said.

The whole point of divx compatibility as that you can quickly burn a data disk without losing any MORE quality and having ONE machine that will play them back as well. Being good with "standard" DVD also saves rack space. If I had more room I'd probably have 2 players one just for divx, but why should I have to go that way?

Its not a case of oddball codecs. Losing, I would say, nearly 50% of the screen on playback of all divx disks to me doesn't qualify as divx compatibility. Even the dealership thought so.

My post was designed to give some info to others looking for a one box solution as I've tried getting the same info myself without success.

Yes and the one box solution for playing these types of files is a HTPC 'not' a hardware DVD player. Your argument is a bit like complaining that your car isn't a 4 wheel drive, they've both got 4 wheels haven't they?

The DIVX/AVI/WMV etc, etc... compatibility of any hardware DVD player is always going to be limited due to codec changes, encoding problems with files etc...

I've tried to play enough poorly (or out of spec) encoded video files on my PC to know that you might want to check that out first, regardless of what another DVD player does.
