Unhappy UK Samsung HD-950: Trouble with R1 DVDs

Hello everyone,

I've spent the better part of an hour wandering through different forums and search engines looking for someone who has suffered the same issue I am, but to no solution, so hopefully someone here can help.

Last month I decided to buy a new DVD player as my current one (Sony DAVDS-1000 entertainment system) doesn't have an easy means of modding to multi-region. Based on Internet/forum reviews I opted for the Samsung HD DVD-950 because of it's reasonable price and HDMI connection + upscaling.

I bought it from Richer Sounds who even provided the necessary code to make it multiregion (same as off most websites) and it worked fine. The player is multi-region, very straightforward.

It's connected to my TV (Sony KDFE50A12 50" LCD Projection) through the HDMI connection, and R2 discs play absolutely beautifully, sound and picture are amazing, Star Wars Ep. III can definitely show off my setup well....

However, R1 discs have a very annoying habit (that I can't seem to do anything about) in that the movies seem to jitter, skip, not sure how to describe it. You can see the playback on R1 discs is not smooth and fluent, slow pans seem to have a jog effect. I'm hoping someone knows what I'm trying to describe.

I know it's not the discs, I've tried better part of 20 different movies and compared them to the playback on a crappy £40 Bush player I've multi-regioned plus my super high-spec Alienware system. Playback on these is fine, so it's definitely my new Samsung player.

Anyway, has anyone any experience with this problem? I'd very much appreciate it if anyone could lend some help my way.

Thanks everyone.

Sounds like the player is in PAL60. I don't own a Samsung, but from reading this threads, it seems that you have to select NTSC manually from the setup menu if you want a pure NTSC signal, and not converted PAL. Hope this helps.

the 950 doesn't have auto pal/ntsc switching, so you need to go into the setup and put it on the right setting, otherwise it will jerk. unlike the front display light, it will remember the settings when you turn the player on and off

if you have it on the right setting it should play fine. you can get a little bit of jerkiness on ntsc, but i don't think thats what you are describing as if i play a disc on the wrong setting on my 950 it does jerk badly

Yes, I think that is your problem. You can have either NTSC, PAL or PAL60 which is a 'quasi-PAL' setting that allows you to play NTSC movies on a PAL tv. Try setting it to pure NTSC for Region 1 movies and it should play smoothly assuming your display can handle pure NTSC (nearly all newer displays can)

im having a similar problem with my dvd player (sony dvp ns930) and dlp (sp50l7) in that the picture jerks vertically when watching dvds in progressive scan (other modes are fine). it happens particularly on NTSC dvds!

Does anyone know how to apply the correct setting to the sp50l7 to fix this??

Simon, can you confirm you get the left and right audio coming out of the correct speakers on your tv when connected though the hdmi cable?
