Denon 1920 optical socket

Can anyone help please.
I have recently got a Hitachi 7200 and Denon 1920. Because they are sited in a corner it is not practical to add an audio system. However, I notice the Denon has a digital optical socket and was wondering if I would be able to connect an active sub woofer through this to give some extra oomph to my DVD watching.
Hope someone can help
Cheers

The subwoofer would need a digital optical (toslink) input, and integral 5.1 decoder - like maybe a Logitech Z-5500 Digital, a THX-certified, 5.1 surround sound speaker system. You'd just use the sub, and store the sats for future use. This has digital optical, coaxial, and 6ch direct inputs.Alternatively, you could just try the 5.1 analogue audio subwoofer output on the 1920 to a simple active subwoofer.

The only problem with using the analog sub output on the denon is how would you control the volume? :-)

If the hitachi has RCA L&R outs, then most subs can use that as the input, where you would adjust the crossover on the sub. Then when you increase the volume on your TV, the volume of the sub will also increase in tandem.
