Denon 1920/Pioneer 436XDE combination

A previous thread has prompted this.

I need some opinions form owners of this combo. I cannot spot any improvement when going from std feed to 720p upscaling. In fact I find std res better with less noise in the picture than 720p....and forget about 1080P - that's much worse. Am I missing something? Can somebody point me to anything that will make me believe upscaling has any value with this combo or is the Pio upscaler simply better than that in the Denon?

Also component output seems a little better than HDMI........are these 'technology upgrades' just:

a) smoke and mirrors/ marketing hype?
b) not significant on this specific combo?
c) real and genuine and I need help to spot them?

Opinions please

Budget cables in both cases. That's another 'kings new clothes' subject but I intend to borrow a friends 'quality' HDMI lead to prove the point to him.... or eat humble pie, whichever.

i have a dvd2910 with a 436, i noticed a big difference between that and my old (which i only had fora couple of months) in picture quality but mainly in audio quality, don't forget audio is 50% the satisfaction of a movie if not more with a good av kit. also mines via qed hdmi lead and a qed sr75 digi coax for the audio
