So I buy a shiney new (ish) Philips 9000, and head down to dc101 to get some SACD's. Rig the whole system up (optical cable to my HK amp), pop Jamie Cullum SACD in, but it doesn't work! Will only play the CD-DA layer. SACD runs. but no sound comes out. So.. I was wondering, do you need to have the 5.1 connected in seperate cables, rather than optical for SACD to work?

Also, as soon as I put war of the worlds in the drive, it spins, then ejects. Yet the CD works fine in a normal CD polayer (tis a hybrid).

Anyone any ideas? Any help much appreciated!

to play sacd you have to use analog rca. Not sure but you also might be able to use i-link or denon-link

Ah, that explains it then. So, I would need to get one of the surround 6 cables from the power buy section to head sacd?

To be able to hear SACD you'll have to connect you player to your receiver through the 5.1 output (as dartagnain said). As SACD is a high quality feed I'll suggest you buy some prober interconnectors. I can personally recommend TeraLabs cables. Go down to your local hifi dealer and ask to listen to different interconnectors before you choose. A rule of thumb: use around 10% of the price of your rig on cables. And remember: Bad sound kills good music.

drpellypo, I think you've got the right idea buying your cables from Mark Grant's Power buy. Any of the brand cables will cost you a small fortune for 6 rca's. I've got some of Mark's for my SACD & they sound excellent, made to a very high standard. Additionally, once your dealer has got round to hooking up a different set of 6 interconnects for you to listen to after auditioning some, you will probably have forgotten what the first ones sounded like.

I would never, ever buy branded cables, as you seem to be paying so much money and not getting much back for it! Just my thought, anyway.

I was like you once. Wouldn't buy quality cable's 'cos I didn't think much of it. That changed when I heard the difference between £10 interconnectors and £100 interconnectors. If somebody had told me about it, I wouldn't had believed them, but I went down to my local hifi shop and the dealer persuaded me to listen to different interconnectors. I'm glad I did. Give it a try and hear the difference. It's free anyhow. Besides, even the cheapest branded cables are better then the stock standard cables that usually comes along with the player. Remember, a chain is as weak as the weakest link. It's a waste to buy a good quality player and a good quality receiver if you only gonna use low-end cables.

Does the machine display any message?

I know it is stating the obvious, but have you tried it in another machine or on the PC. Does the disc have any marks on it, and all it requires is a quick clean. I am assuming that other disks are playing fine, so it could be just a 'duff' disc and needs to be replaced.

At what point did I ever say I was buying low-end cables? What gave you that idea? I'd never buy 'branded' cables, because you can get exactly the same thing without a brand label on it, from Mark. I am well aware the difference between low-end cables and better quality ones. I'm also well aware that price is not a reflection of the aforementioned.

Non at all. I put the disk in, it spins for about 20 seconds or so, then ejects. The CD works fine in a normal CD player, and there's no scratches, marks, damage etc on it. Also, a different SACD disc I have works fine in the Philips too, so it just seems to be that particular disc that it doesn't like.

Oh, I forgot to say, it's Dark Side of The Moon, not WOTW. Not that such a thing makes that much difference.

Is there a chance the SACD portion of the disk is duff? Because I can play the non sacd layer fine on a normal cd player.
