Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

The Secrets Bencmark tests for this player have been released. The model number is different, but I think that is the USA model number: DVPNS75H.
The score of 85 for HDMI connection is very good.

Quote:
The DVP-NS75H represents the best progressive scan player I’ve tested from Sony so far. Surprising because it is also one of the cheapest players they’ve released. I am not sure what MPEG decoder they are using here as it has the standard Sony stamp on it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it is a Mediatek design. The player is quite fast and performs very similar to some other MTK based players I’ve tested.

I did add a 'thanks' to your earlier post (you know that little thing at the bottom) but seeing as you need a little ego massage - thanks

Always great when someone goes against the man and posts a service manual

It's not an "Ego massage" It's called manners and common courtesy which by the tone of your message, you know little about. If you pressed the thank you button what makes you think you are not one of the seven I mention. Unless you lied? The main reason I am pointing out the running total which is now 121 downloads and eight thank you's is so perhaps people will rialise why people like me stop uploading things like this. I doubt I will ever do it again especially when it attracts a kick in the nuts from people like you.

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

I think im going to go for this player until the new format war sorts itself out, i just need to know a couple of things before i buy. Are there any sort of picture adjustment settings (via hdmi) like being able to use a horizontal stretch option so 4:3 images become full screen? i currently use my Xbox 360 via VGA upscaled to 720P and although it looks great its a tad too noisy for my liking so if this player has the same picture adjustment options then im sold, any comments appreciated.

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

you still get dvds that are in 4:3?....I havnt got any?....And if i do have any material that is 4:3 i just use the tv's scaler and select it to full screen..

Iv had this player since october time and am more impressed with the picture quality on it than my mates stand alone seperates DVD system which cost 500 quid...Funnily enough though (prob due to my tv's scaler) the picture looks a bit better in 1080i than it does in 720p...anyone else with this player noticed this?

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

I bought this player from play.com,and it arrived on Friday.
I am not overly impressed with the difference in quality, but I think my expectations were a bit high.

Could anyone please post what they think are the best settings to use with this player.Maybe a few adjustments are all I need.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You will probably find that the people that thanked you, are the ones that will get most use out of the manual and really appreciate your upload. Most are just downloading it because they can, will never use it and may not even read it. Unfortunately that is the way of the Internet.

Most of my DVDs that are 4:3 are shows such as Family Guy, Simpsons etc, My tv has a widescreen option but doesnt perform a horizontal stretch on DVDs, so back to my original question, does this player have any adjustment settings?

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

thats strange i have the simpons and i guess my player seems to be making them full screen as my tv makes me push a size button (which it does not with the simpsons discs) which like you said are 4:3...there must be an option in there somewhere for letter box/16:9 options....Go in there and have a play

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

I got the Sony DVPNS76H from Superfi the other week and I have to say, build wise and in general its a great player.

However, I haven't noticed a big jump in PQ compared to my 7 year old scart player which wasn't even connected via RGB scart.

I have the Sony via HDMI set to 720p into my Toshiba 37WLT68. Don't get me wrong the picture is still good but I can't really see any difference between that and my Sky+ picture which is a bit of a let down.

Guess these upscaling DVD really aren't much crack then.

You're welcome mate, Thanks for speaking up for me.
You are probably right Submariner_HTC, I would imagine a lot of people think the service manual is going to teach them something, hopefully something for nothing, and don't realise that unless you have the training and qualifications you won't understand the manual, it's next to useless and full of complicated pictures and text that they can't understand. If they try to do anything with it they will screw their equipment. But hey, maybe if they had said thank you I would have helped them when the time comes .
134 downloads nine thank you's

@ wedgehog
I apologise if I have offended you in any way - that is not my intention.
There is nothing worse than someone using this type of forum as a bitch session and wasting valuable space that can be used for good (helping others or getting help).

Unfortunately we all have to do this and not expect too much gratitude.
Most people of forums will not say thank you or give a monkeys what you have done. This is the internet, most people cannot type properly let alone have manners & courtesy.

Yet again I thank you for posting the manual - many will find it invaluable and a great help.

Now can we get back to the topic.

Same here. I have a Tosh WLT66 32" and so far, I've not been blown away by this player (connected via HDMI). The picture improvement, when compared to my Pionner DVD player (connected via RGB SCART) is hardly noticeable.

Maybe the Tosh TV's just have a bloody good upscaler built in?

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

Suppose I may as well post my impressions in case anyone with the same TV as me (LG 32LC2D) is thinking of getting an NS76.

Must say I'm very happy with mine. I've done side by side comparisons with my old Philips DVD player (connected through RGB SCART) and the NS76 connected via HDMI at 1080i. No doubt the picture is better from the Sony. I've done frame for frame comparisons using picture-by-picture and the Sony definitely upscales better. It makes the LG upscaler in my TV look a little clumsy by comparison.

Watched Alien and the Star Wars series (the 'special needs' editions) so far on it, and they've never looked so good. Worth £81 IMO.

Only real gripe would be the awful font for the subtitles and the player can be a bit anal about skipping through some menus.

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

On my LG RZ32LZ55 there is not a huge differance to my old Sony NS-330 connected via RGB scart but i did notice that on Day after Tommorow the background of the scenes was definately sharper throught the new player over the old.

Have to say the old player was a good one but this has more features leaves my only RGB socket for sky so it was a good buy for the price.

Ive found 720p to provide a nicer picture for me to, and its set to cinema 2 picture.

Happy with it but its not a huge jump from a good RGB player.

Is it something to with with Interlace/Progressive?

JUst replying to my own post here.

I have seen this again two or three times on both PAL and NTSC sources now. The last time was the R2 version of Star Trek Voyager. Is it something to do with interlacing/progressive?

I am using a HDMI to DVI connection to a BenQ W100 projector. The HDMI which seems to be progressive only as their is no way to make it interlace. If I press the progressive button on the front it makes no differences and switched from Auto to Video to Auto again.

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

That picture looks like what happens when interlaced content is shown on a progressive display with no deinterlacing. My guess is it's only deinterlacing the content when the movie is playing. When you pause it just show the current interlaced frame, which effectively has half the resolution of the display.

It really shouldn't happen at all when the movie is playing though. Do you get it just the same whether you're outputting 720p or 1080i? I do have voyager DVDs so I'll see if I get it too.

The projector is only SD. It does it during playback and the PJ is progressive as well. So far, it has only done it on a few discs.

Hi to all. I found this player great for divx. All you need to do is press zoom buton on your tv remote control. Played several movies, no problems at all.

Had mine a few months. Hasn't missed a beat yet!
No lip-synch issues, great picture through HDMI, very good with jpeg files.
Would highly recommend at this price point.

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h dual HDMI & coax out

All,

Does anyone know if the NS76 will permit audio through the digital coax or optical when HDMI is plugged in?

I know of some players where the audio outputs are disabled automatically when HDMI is used.

Cheers
