Not really interested in faffing around with the settings, very happy with this player.

To be honest my experience is pretty much the same. On my old TV I just ran the quick setup, which disabled the digital out and so on.
When I got my new TV and receiver I plugged in the HDMI cable and digital out, reran the setup, to enable all the new features. Other than that I just had a check to make sure all the fancy things (like sound processing mode things) were turned off.
So far I'm very happy with it.

I haven't needed to change any of the picture quality settings - the defaults suit my CRT and projector admirably. It is always possible that some displays may be better with different settings, but it's probably best not to change them unless there's an obvious improvement.

I was thinking about buying this DVD player, but can anyone confirm whether it gives a noticibly better picture quality than a PS2 over component, and therefore is worth the money?

Also, does it upscale over component?

I think you will find that a toaster will give a better picture than a PS2 !!!!

To answer your question, yes the NS76 will be a great deal better than a PS2.

Is there anyway to adjust the picture ratio in the service menu ?

I find that when the player is set to 720p or 1080i the picture is fractionally squashed horizontally (the THX circle is slightly oval)

Has anyone else experienced this, is there a firmware update to fix this ??

My first post so go easy on me!

I have seen this question asked a number of times but have not seen an answer, as I also have an interest am going to ask it again.

I have a 42" hitachi 9700 plasma, xbox 360 and the 360 hd dvd player which I connect via component (I don't think I can get 1080i if I use the VGA cable)

I have this week been researching upscale DVD players but the question bugging me is will I see an improvement over either the 360 itself or the hd dvd drive?

I don't mind the £100 if I will see a benefit but would hate to be underwhelmed.

I have no idea what the picture is like from a 360 as I have never seen one. I thought they were for playing games on. All I can tell you is that on your 42 inch screen 720 spread across it will be better then 625 and 1080 will be better than both of those. The more information there is on the screen, the better the quality of the picture. Now then, as to whether you will actually see a difference that you think is worth spending the money on is mainly going to be down to what your expectations are and how good your vision is, go find one on display in Curry's or comet or the likes, they are doing HD displays now and ask the guy to show you 720 and 1080 and see what you think. For me personally I only have a 32 and as expected I don't see any difference between 720 and 1080. Bob

Upscaling will always be debatable.
But IMO the ns76h is a better dvd player than the 360 , without a doubt.
Throw in nearly every divx/avi/xvid file playback/upscaling and you have one tasty player.

If you have the HD-DVD drive for the Xbox360, you could buy £100 of HD-DVD movies and the high definition discs will look the best. If you only want to play upscaled DVDs, then the Sony is a good option. Picture improvement can be a personal opinion, and you might not see a drastic improvement and certainly not as good as a high definition picture.

First of all, I would like to say a big HI to everyone on these boards. You all do a fantastic job of spreading knowledge and helping people out with regards to all thngs A/V.

I have a question that I hope somebody can answer...

I have recently purchased the ns76h (multi-region) but I can't seem to get the player to upscale my DVDs. I have it connected via HDMI to my LG 32LX2R LCD TV, but no matter what setting I put the DVD player to output at, my TV says that it is displaying at 576p.

I have tried connecting my PC to the HDMI port on my TV and this runs fine, outputting at 1360 x 768. I have even tried connecting the Sony to my DVI input (using an HDMI to DVI cable) but the TV still says it is displaying at 576p.

Does anyone know how I can get to display at 720p or 1080i?

Have you selected the HDMI to output at 720 or 1080 in the DVD's set up menu ?

Yep, I have tried all of the settings in the DVD menu (including the 'auto') setting.

The strange thing is that, when playing Region 1 DVDs in the player, the TV informs me that it is successfully displaying in either 720p or 1080i (depending on which setting the Sony is set to), but any Region 2 DVDs always display at 576p according to my TV.

It's almost as if the Sony quite happily upscales on R1 DVDs , but refuses to do the same thing on R2 DVDs.

Any ideas why?
