Gultronics sells it for £83 (possibly the cheapest price)

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

A few questions

How does the pic compare to the NS92?

Will the pic stay the same quality if I used HDMI to DVI?

Would it be much of an improvement over a Sony NS585 using component?

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

All of the above, defaults to 1080i.

Looks very nice indeed, big improvment over RGB Scart.

Only slight downside is that you can't just cycle through the upscale settings, you need to stop the disc and then enter the menu.

I don't know about the other questions, but I am using HDMI (Sony DVD) to DVI (NEC plasma) and the quality is great, much better than the component connection. AFAIK video quality does not change when using DVI, but you do lose two-way communication, for example, HDMI to HDMI means the display can tell the video source what is the best resolution for the display and set the video source to output that resolution. Not a big loss.

I used to own a Sony 730p DVD player and the Sony 76h is much, much better.

HDMI is a direct desendant of DVI, the video is the same it simply adds audio signals as well.

You have to enable "digital out" in the system set up menu.

I got one of these from Superfi and although I have next to it a HTPC that cost me over £1000 I can say that the picture over HDMI is fantastic.

I have just watched Attack Of the Clones and the detail of the colours and sharpness blew me away.

Its like watching new movies all over again.

Buy one

This is a great player, tried it out proper last night watching Last Samuri on a Sony kdl-40w2000 through HDMI.
Great picture and sound.
Highly recomended

Have you tried changing cables? Any old RCA cable will do for testing purposes. Once digital out is set to on, within the Sony menu, the coax output should work, unless something is broken.

The other week my brother could not work out why his brand new yammy subwoofer was cutting out. When I checked, he had used an old RCA cable that was broken. If only he had used the cable that had come with the sub

Cheers.

@psikey - nice too hear that you like the performance of the NS76 very much. Any interesting observations during the time you set up your player you would like to share? Have you fiddled with the picturecontrols etc.?
Just wondering if you have any update on your comparisons? If its a good upgrade, I may well go out and get one today.

Exclamation Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

what swung it for me was the disk resume - kids keep changing dvds. Is there a hack to play the feature straight away?

Ordered from Superfi on the 13.dec.06, after checking on the phone they had stock -still waiting. Got lazy over doing multiregion myself.

JohnLewis give a 2 year warranty. Is a year's worth of warranty worth £10? (I banged it on Nationwide CC to push to 2 but at JL would have pushed to 3)

Meanwhile I am still waiting for Barclaycard (or whoever they outsource this to) to mend a Toshiba sd-330E (got the 3rd year warranty om top of 2 from JL when Barclaycard were still doing it) - the courier failed to collect of Friday - WAITED FROM 12 TO 5.

I'm thinking of getting one of these players for my father-in-law but am worried about making it multi-region - is the only way of doing this through a One For All remote?

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

I am thinking of recommending this player for a relative. She is waiting delivery of a sony 40X. Currently she has an all in one player, a sony DVA-S500, but it only has a S video connection, for the tv (i.e. no component or hdmi connection)

I thought she could use the S76H to play upscaled dvd via hdmi to the 40X, and use an optical connection from the S76H to the DVA-S500 for the sound.

Does anybody see any problem with this before I get to part with her cash?

It should work fine but make sure the sony DAV-S500 has a optical in that accepts 5.1 first.

Yep the manual states the DAV S500 has an optical in input. I think the output for the tv is composite and s video, so am I right in thinking the sony NS76H will give a better picture?

You can also buy it already multi region, for example from http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/p...roduct_ID/2729

If that TV has a HDMI socket then it will be loads better than composite and s video. The next best would be either component or RGB scart.

Re: Sony Dvp-ns76h

HDMI is fantastic, a huge increase ove RGB Scart.

The only issue is that once you've got used to an upscaled HDMI image you can't go back, and as HDMI ports are limited expect HDMI switchbox's to become commonplace soon.
