WGLOVER, out of interest could you tell me what make your better HDMI cable is? Seems like it made quite a difference!

Clearer Audio Copper line.

I got it for free subscribing to What Video Sound & Vision magazine.

I have just ordered a QED cable to see how it performs.

I use an Ixos XHT458.

Just out of interest, does anyone else using the player with a Bravia think that some people look a bit tall in films - as if you are showing an anamorphic image on a 4:3 TV. I just noticed it in Star Wars: AOTC. I know Haden and Christopher Lee are supposed to be tall but they do look especially tall and thin. Could just be my eyes but...

I think my Panasonic 32"LXD60 is a better upscaler than the Sony, and probably most of the upscaling DVDs.
SD from Telewest, 576i from the Sony are not far off the HD pictures I have been watching. With a 32" screen from 8 feet away you can't see much difference, all being very good.
As you get close the SD Tv pictures start deteriorating at about 4 feet, the DVD at about 1 foot and the HD at 'nose on screen'.

It maybe my Sony is faulty, not seeming to be able to send 576p on HDMI.

Knowing my luck, more than likely, Quality is rubbish these days on most things you buy.

Oh, another thing, with the Sony set to this, none of the lights shine.

Don't look so high tech.
WGLOVER - I have the exact same setup as you - How do you tell whether the Panacronic is running at 1080, or does it automatically switch?

Cheers

Press the i button - it shows the definition and input HDMI1 or HDMI2.

It works on component also.

The panasonic shows what you have the input set to.

Make sure to press it again to remove them. If you leave it to itself it leaves the HDMI symbol on.
If this happens just press i again twice.

Had an email today regarding the Divx issue:

"Thank you for your recent enquiry. Please allow me to apologise for the delay in replying.

In order to fully investigation this matter I would like to invite you to send in one of your discs so that we can see what you are experiencing and investigate further. I'm going to send them a disc with trailers from www.divx.com.

Good news Rachel, lets see how it goes at your end. I got ziltch response in Sweden. After 2 hours on the phone they began to circle reference me to the first one I spoke to again.

Ordered the QED cable from 'cable-shop.co.uk' yesterday.
Arrived first thing this morning. What service.

This also is far better than the telewest supplied cable.

Watching Star Wars Sith film. Can HD dvd be much better?

Does Anakin look especially tall? I know he is supposed to be anyway, but when I watched AOTC him and Chris Lee just seem a bit, well, anamorphic stretcho vision.

ROTS is a great disc for demoing. Watched The Matador last night - colours, res, everything looked fab at 1080i. Very, very pleased with this player.

Bought one of these players on a whim on Friday evening (bad week at work, needed something to take my mind off it!) after being a bit disappointed with the performance of my old Sony player (cheapo DVPNS355) with my new Sony KDL32S2010 telly.

Having lived with it for a few days all I can say is What a difference! Admittedly it has to be a good DVD for the magic to work, but when it does work the amount of extra detail in the picture is jaw-dropping. Fave DVD's tried so far are Chicken Run and Attack Of The Clones. With a picture this good, I'll be amazed if HD-DVD offers subjectively a better picture.

The only catch I've discovered so far is discs recorded on my DVD recorder don't switch between 16:9 and 4:3, but I can just watch those on the recorded so no great loss.

Overall, I'm impressed!

Good news about the DivX problem being looked into. If they can get that sorted then this Sony will be the perfect cheap player for modern 720p TV's until the new tech arrives in quantity!

BTW I'm using a Belkin "PureAv" (not the top of the range version, which is overpriced!) 1.8 m hdmi lead, works well .

Oooh, nasty. The plan is to buy this before I get my HDTV in a couple of weeks. So I know I'll have something to use with it.

I guess I'll just have to find a cheap Scart cable in the meantime.

Mine came with a composite video and two phono leads for audio. I'll never use them. You'll need to buy decent component, Scart, or HDMI leads.

Yeah, this is a must - but I wouldn't hook it up by scart as it's a bit pointless buying it otherwise.

I just got one of these lovely Sony players today. I'm pretty impressed with the picture quality via HDMI through my Tosh 32WLT66, but I have one slight possible problem, which I noticed when the Quick setup menu appeared when I first powered up the player.

In the setup menu, all the fonts seem to have a fairly faint but certainly noticeable shadow. For example, the white fonts on dark blue background have a light blue shadow.

I can't decide whether this is some kind of interference or whether it's just part of the font design!

Could someone check this for me on their player? - Particularly if any of you have the same TV as me (hint hint Sharpfish!).

Cheers.

The fonts on mine are not perfect, never seen a player that does Hi Fi fonts.
Doesn't worry me.

Are your fonts kind of broken as well, ie. not solid but jaggedy?

Can you see the shadows, though?

I suppose my fonts are kind of pixely, even in 720p or 1080i modes. I think that's just part of their simplistic design. I don't think they hired any expensive graphic artists for the menus!

Is your picture OK?

Fonts dont matter.
My pictures are very good. People using Telewest TVDrive on 1080i setting notice fonts being flakey. This doesn't affect the pictures.

Yeah, I think my pics are OK.

I've been looking all night to see if the picture itself is affected, but I can't see anything. It looks damn good in fact.

I have to say I don't think it's a night and day difference compared to RGB SCART, but it's definitely sharper and the digital noise seems less apparent. It's more or less what I expected - extremely good in that it's the best DVD picture I've seen yet, but definitely not a substitute for real HD.

Hello all, sorry if i've missed this on this forum already, but what is the difference between the NS76 and the NS92v players.

And also, once i get one of these players, should i run it with a component or a hdmi cable, as i don't want to buy both.

The 76 is newer than the 92 and cheaper.
Their specs. read very much the same. Both are very good.
One would expect the 92 to be better, but unless you have had experience with both you can't say.

I have my 76 connected with good quality component and HDMI leads.
I am impressed by both.

My component Monster leads cost more than the QED HDMI leads, so the latter should be the way for you to go, assuming you have a spare HDMI input on your TV

it sounds like this player is the bee's. I've been on the prowl for a sub-£100 player to go with my new tosh 32wlt66, this looks like the winner.

It sounds to me like HDMI would be the best route - i have nothing else plugged in to the two connections so no problem there. My question is this; seeing as HDMI is purely digital, is there any benefit on spending huge amounts of cash on the cable? dabs sell one for under a tenner, whilst i could spend more on a cable than the player itself which sounds ludicrous. So how much should I spend?

And while i'm on the subject, does HDMI carry audio? If i hooked this up to a 5.1 amp would i get any sync problems. My guess is no but i'd like some explanation if poss.

I didn't think the cable would make much difference, but experience converted me.

The HDMI pictures were good, but certain dark scenes looked a bit splichy (Batman Begins for example).
I swapped the Telewest supplied lead for a Clearer Audio lead and found the improvement most noticeable.
TheTVDrive SD picture, previously very good, now didn't look so good.
I have purchased a QED cable for £39.90 and discarded the Telewest lead.

The HDMI does carry audio, I notice no lip sink problems from the TV.
I am using the coax output to my amp, and again , no lip sink problems.
