Question Multi-disc dvd players - Avoid inconvenience of dual DVD5s ?

Hi everyone, just wondering if there is a way to avoid the problem of two discs for one film.

I have backed up a DVD9 movie of mine to two DVD5 discs. Now is there a dvd player that can take both of them and seamlessly integrate between the both ?

or must i stick to the whole take out first dvd replace with second etc.... ?

Any help would be gr8. Thanks.

Dual layer discs cost between £3-£7 for the privilege of 2ice the capacity of 4.7g single layer which are virtually 30-50p for one.

There are very few multidisc DVD players ( Ive only seen 2) and they tended to be part of a midi hifi system capable of being multi cd players as well. Not very expensive
Im not sure what that says for their DVD playback ability.

I have no experience with these players, but these are available here in Australia.

http://www.intl.onkyo.com/products/a...702/index.html
http://panasonic.com.au/products/det...?objectID=1973

I quick check on the Europe sites makes no mention of them. So they are made, but I don't know what models are available.

svp are doing boxes of 10 dual layer discs for £1.60, so £1.60 each (at the moment, due to go cheaper) buys you a helluva lotta discs and saves you buying another dvd player

Nice pricing.
I however have had mixed sucess with compatibility of playback of non- commercial dual discs for video.
Lately I have used them more for data storage/backup media than for making longer playing video at best PQ.
Many video titles stripped of extras ( such as multiple language or " making of" .....) will fit a 4.7G disc at very good quality

Well the thing is that I view my movies on a 100" screen so any quality reduction will be obvious !

Really wish there was some sort of dual dvd system that would load the second as the first is ending - so no gap !

BTW from my experience in Dual Layer Media its pointless using any of them for video apart from the Verbatim media. The rest are very dodgy in commercial dvd players - verbatim media is always nearly perfect. However it does cost :/ about £3 a disk.

Well surely the whole point of a backup is a system in case you lose the original ?

Well if i lose one i dont want to have to switch a dvd over in the middle of a film !

So that's why im asking - before i back up any of my dvds i want to see if there's a way around (i) paying a lot for dual layer blanks or (ii) compressing - without switching disks mid-film.

rather than spend a lot of money or time on a new player or making backup copies you would be better reviewing your system for storing and looking after your dvds, and you shouldn't loose any. again outweigh the cost of replacing the odd disc if it did go missing against the cost of backups or another machine. how often do you ever loose a dvd, and how do you possibly loose them? if your loosing discs by loaning them out and not getting them back, simply stop doing that (or loan out a backup instead and not worry about it) and state to people the reasons for not loaning is due to not getting discs back

Backups are valid if you have children or poor memory ( like me )

Jammy fingers do not do DVDs any favours.
Unless you are disciplined, you will ( eventually) loan a friend your DVDs and perhaps forget them.( how many times can you say no??)

Dual layer DVDs are a bit of a hassle( cost and compatibility), and multi dvd players arent exactly flooding the market.
I backup (mainly ) the childrens DVDs and keep the originals as I have no intention of buying them twice.

Unless you are prepared to reauthor the backups to make the main movie fit a DVD5 ( 4.7G) Loss of quality will happen. It varies and may be acceptable
Superbit DVDs back up particularly well even with a little compression

Saying that, Some "normal bit" DVDs ( ex rental Bought off blockbusters) are actually the full uncompressed copy and fit in a DVD5 so these things vary.

I too like crisp PQ and DTS ES/ DD5.1 or DD ex( 6.1): But I only have a 32" HD ready Phillips LCD not a 100" screen So PQ drop( if any) is bearable ( or subconciously ignored

The DVD player also seems to make a difference in highlighting any drop in PQ from backups due to some compression. Lesser DVD players can make backed up DVDs look unwatchable.
It is doubtful if any DVD changer will feature a mid range mpeg decoding to.
As you can see there is no perfect solution out there
Whatever you do will have to be a compromise. I would stick to DVD5 with Slight Drop in PQ or: (take out first dvd replace with second etc...)
