Samsung 850 vs Samsung 950

Is the 950 much better than the 850 in terms of features and quality?
As far as I can tell the 950 is £20 more expensive cos it plays SACD and DVD-A. Is this the only difference?
Is the HDMI output on the Samsungs good quality?

You're right, digital audio playback is the only real difference, apart from the colour.

I'm happy with the HDMI quality, for the price.

Good on you m8.
The new Samsungs will cost a bit more and give you 1080p for which there is hardly any source material
Besides most current Tvs dont natively suuport that resolution and we are all waiting for hd dvd or blu- ray anyhow.
Most of us find that 576p /720p from 850/950 is good enough.
Samsung is being rather obstinate in not releasing firmware that would tweak the 850/950 make thier many owners happy cos they want to push the newer one which are no great improvement.

The Samsungs HDMI output is ( for its cost) above average.

The same is said for the Tosh component output.

That would be the comparison to make.
It is unlikely that the Tosh via RBG Scart will be as good as The Samsung via HDMI .
Ive only tested the Denon 1920 vs Samsung950 : That Is Better but not by the £50-80 difference
Note that not all HDMI is implemented well in all machines and "upscaling" seems (in these budget DVD Players) to be a hit or miss thing.
The rest will depend on your display , the material you play and your personal unique visual perception of what is the " better" Picture
Get The Shop ( Richer Sounds) to Demo for you with your own DVDs and take your Tosh with you, using a TV/ Dispaly similar to yours.

But I need a player that has Optical Out and HDMI out. For under £150. Does one exist that will give me a better picture than my Tosh 330 via RGB Scart?

Yes , the Samsung, The Phillips 5900 or add a bit more , The Denon 1920.

The Tosh is not the ultimate in PQ. It just happens to be a good player which is tops in the Value for money stakes.
I found the Denon really great compared to the Samsung ( and indeed the Tosh 350) but it cost that much more and unless you have them to compare directly all the DVD players will do a good Job.
Comparisons are made like this to avoid you wasting money and only getting marginal benefit from what you already have . You can liken them to magazine reviews which look for subtle differences in order to get the award winners.
You can get both the Samsung850/950 and Phillips 5900 now for less than £100 with optical out and HDMI.
The problem is that after say the Denon, youll need to spend £500 + to get a player with that much more.
Regardless of any advice opinions given here, you go to your local AV dealer and ask for a live Demo in a store and let your eyes do the judging
Good luck
