1st Generation Panasonic Plasma + DVD

I am looking to purchase a really good DVD player. I'm thinking of the Denon 2910 or the 3910.

I have a Panasonic TH50PHD3 which has some sort of scaling technology onboard.

I can only use the component input for the screen.

Sorry for this naive question. Will I see any picture benefit from the Denon upscaling technology into this particular screen on a component input?

I am looking for the best possible sound and picture combination from a new DVD player at a sub £800 price. (Also linked to Lexicon MC1, Parasound Amp and Kef speakers). If I have to compromise then best picture would have a higher priority than sound.

Any advice on this secific question and alternate players would be appreciated.

I'm not aware that Denon is allowed to upscale via component output...Samsung and Oppo are...so the answer would be NO because you can't get upscaled via component from a Denon...why can't you use DVI/HDMI?

Hello martin_dms

Kalos Geros is correct - Denon only offer video up-conversion on the Digital HDMI or DVI Outputs of its DVD players which is not ideal for you as your Display is not compatible with these Digital signals.

Video up-conversion done effectively can be beneficial - though its currently one of the most over hyped 'technologies' in the DVD player market.

To be truly effective video up-conversion should only take place once in your system.

Your Display has 1366x768 pixels and a R1 DVD Video disc has 720x480 pixels and a R2 DVD Video disc has 720x576 pixels - you'll notice that the vast majority of DVD players that offer video up-conversion only up-convert to pre determined video timings (most of them use bought in 'up-conversion' chip sets that only offer fixed output timings).

You'll also notice the popular outputting timings available on up-converting DVD players are 720P and 1080i - neither of which is a match for your 1366x768 pixel array; so even with an up-converting player your Display still has to process and re-map the Input signal.

Its also true to say that your Displays 'Component' Inputs were not designed to accept a 1366x768P signal at 50Hz or 60Hz - so everything you do ultimately relies in some shape or form on the video processing engine within your Display.

With your set-up I'd be considering the Arcam DV79 which produces an excellent 480P and 576P 'Component' video output (along with decent sound) and includes an HDMI Output which will be relevant if you decide to upgrade your Display at a later date.

Best regards

Joe

what is your current DVD payer? as you may be better off keeping your existing player especially if it has good interlaced component output and add a dedicated external scaler like a lumagen Dvi or iscan HD worth cosidering as this will offer improvements to everything not just DVD
