Will my DVD Collection become obsolete?

With the much-documented coming of HD-DVD, will my large collection of DVDs be unplayable on a HD-DVD player. If so, what is the point of getting into another VHS vs Betamax situation (yes, I had Beta!).

All new and upcoming players both HDDVD and Bluray will be backwards compatible, it would be marketing suicide if they werent, no one would buy them.

Even if they weren't, what's stopping you keeping your existing DVD player?
