I have ordered one of these and hope to have it by the end of the week.

Anybody know what bit rate the MP3's must be in order to play on this machine?

Will 192Kbits/s work?

I created a test CD with (I think) 128, 192 and 256 Kbps and they all worked on a 545. I'm currently ripping, encoding and burning MP3 disks from my CD collection. I'm getting about 5-8 albums per CD.

Anyone know if Dynamic encoding works ???? i rip all of mine with Audio Grabber and use the dynamic encoding - in case no one knows this increases the Bit rate where required and lows when its not needed - so the bit rate is constantly changing. That way i get best sound for the least amount of space - why encode no sound at 256 when it can be encoded at 56 for example.

I have used various cd rippers and mp3 encoders. I now use Exact Audio copy with the excellent Lame mp3 encoder.

This way i can encode mp3s at 128 CBR, 256 CBR, and 192 CBR, 128 VBR etc...

I have burnt all types to cdr and cdrw and ALL bit rate types work!
They sound very good. Quite amazing as some dvd players cut the first couple of seconds off the track! (CYBERHOME! ).

I have a pioneer dv545 though, so maybe the firmware on the 444 is different?

That's interesting to hear. The manual for the 545 definitely says VBR doesn't work, so I didn't even investigate. I just used blade to encode at 256CBR. I might look into using VBR now, though.

Id be very interested to hear if VBR works on the 444 as i currently have 4,000+ mp3's done at VBR - hadnt even though about if they would work on MP3 player or not seeing as they work fine on Winamp.

So if anyone can let me know it would be very much appriciated.

VBR works fine as do all other rates I have tried up to 320kbps.
The on screen display reports 128k when playing VBR.
