What is the 'macroblocking' bug?

Hi PPL,

I've heard reference to the 'macroblocking' bug vis a vis the Faroudja chip found on some of the upscalers like the Oppo OPDV971H, but what is it? What does it look like?
Is it HORRIBLE or just a pain, if your're really looking for it?

Should I buy an OPDV971H????

Oh and is it possible to buy a DVI to Component adaptor?

Cheers,

Jon.

Macroblocking is probably most apparent where there are large areas of colour, e.g. you might see it on a blue background, wall etc. It's literally like pixelated blocks which shift around a bit like there is a brick wall of colour & someones moving the bricks around.

It can be a bit horrible. I tend to get it with my Denon 3910 when the DVD transfer is not top notch. Certain displays get it worse than others. I tend to find that if I send an interlaced component feed to my projector it dissappears, since I think it may be bypassing the faroudja deinterlacing causing the problem.

i remember buying a recent Steven Seagal film for a bit of booze and violence once night....
it was one of his stealthy films where the backdrops are often very dark...

my god, it looked like the backdrops were made of lego....heh

this was on my 3910.......however other films work lovely, depends, some i use HDMI for, others i use Component cable for.....sometimes helps changing from one to the other.....

when it happens tho it is quite distracting, especially on a 86in screen...lol

might not be so bad on a more normal TV size screen, i havnt checked properly yet...
