No HDMI cable with my Samsung 850

I got fed up with waiting for a Denon 1920, and decided to try a Samsung 850.

I asked the dealer if it came with a HDMI cable (I thought I remembered reading that it did) - he said he'd be very surprised.
While he was checking on the website, I spotted on the box "HDMI cable included", so I bought it.

Got home late from work, opened the box - no HDMI cable to be found. Checked the manual, contents list said there should be a HDMI cable.
I'll have to go back to the shop tomorrow and hope that don't think I'm pulling a fast one, trying to get a free cable!

Anyone else had this problem?

I didn't get a cable but then I bought from Pixmania! The European version they supplied doesn't come with one, but the UK version apparently does, there are others who got one.

However even in my manual there was no mention of HDMI cable but it did mention the 3xRCA cable that was bundled. I would say that if your manual says it should have a cable with it then it should be there and thats enough evidence!!

if the box/manual says it should include cables, then you should ask the store for them. the foreign imports such as from pixmania didnt have them i've read on other threads. i got the 950 model and that came with hdmi-hdmi AND dvi-hdmi so make sure you get both if the manual says you should have got them

you can make the 950 multi region via handset hack, you can probably do the same with the 850. have a look at www.dvdrhelp.com as they list most handset hacks

btw, i've been reading recently of the problems playing avi files on the denon 1920, so i'm now glad i got the 950 and did wait

the 950 model is prettymuch the same as the 850, except it also plays sacd and dvda. its about £130 from richer sounds, but play.com might have it a bit cheaper. it's also worth paying the extra £20 for the 3 years warranty

there are plenty other threads with reviews of the 950, i'm glad i bought it. the only thing i miss is playing 5.1 sound on some avi files, but i understand this is a common issue with most divx capable dvd players. it plays some (probably older) avi's in 5.1, but refuses to play others

Went back to the shop today (Comet), and they replaced the whole lot. The replacement had the HDMI cable.
Must have been a packing problem at the factory.

I'll have a cuppa, and plug it in.

Just tried it, and first impressions are very good.
The image retention problem with RGB has gone, and there is no solarisation or pixellation. Colour balance seems a touch towards green.

720p through HDMI to my LE40 looks far better than using my old Panasonic E50 DVD recorder. I've only got R2 disks, so I won't be trying the MR hack yet.

The default settings that Samsung have chosen are a bit odd (PCM audio and dynamic audio compression, for instance), so I'll have to RTFM.

I have a problem with this player in that when connected through my amp via an optical lead the sound goes from wall shaking volume on the loud bits to too quiet to hear the talking on the low volume bits of a film.As i am in a semi this can cause problems.
Dynamic compression is set to on in default settings but I am not syre this is doing anything??

Great PQ though

This is almost certainly not a problem with the player. Your amplifier should have a menu which enables you to preset the levels of your speakers and balance them to suit your listening environment. These menus usually generate a test tone for each speaker so you balance the volume of each one. This will enable you turn up the centre 'speech' speaker and wind down the effects and back speakers. I have a HD950 which also has this menu on board. It takes a bit of time and patience to get things right. Worth it though if you want to stay friendly with neighbours.

U think that's bad? My philips 5900 (wonderful player by the way) didn't have ANY cables! Not even composite or SCART!! How do they think normal people are gonna take that when they open the box??

Good thing i had a HDMI cable lying around... I dread to think what normal people (the ones that dont have unused HDMI cables in the house) will think when they see that, thinking they can just play their favourite DVDs as soon as they buy the player...

Nothing to worry about, you sound 'normal'to me. Re your missing cable - I wonder if someone in the shop 'borrowed' them for another customer.

This has been common practice with computer peripherals for years. I wonder if the retailers get the importers to specify "no cables", just so they can make money selling them as accessories?
