Best DVD Player?

Is there a general consensus on what's the favourite DVD player with HDMI?
Is now a good time to buy or is technology likely to take a quantum leap with HD on the horizon?

The long standing favourite is the Arcam DV79, but lots of people have been saying nice things about the Pioneer DV 989 recently.

A1XV beats all the above with no exception. DVDO scaling and HQV deinterlacing make quite a big difference on screen. I Have not seen better.

That said its not cheap brand new. Also has first rate sound quality.

I wasn't sure whether to mention that. I'm sure it's very good, but is it the FAVOURITE? I think it's too expensive for almost all, but if we are going to broaden our horizons, what about the big bucks Linn, Naim , Krell, Integra Research and Meridian players?

But I guess technology HAS taken a distinct step forwards with the use of the Realta for de-interalcing in the A1XV.

Don't forget the Arcam DV29 (£1600 new), the next step up from the DV79. It would give a lot of more expensive gear a run for it's money Plus it has the advantage of outputting a 480i/576i via HDMI (like the DV79), which when linked to a good video scaler/processor, gives a great picture.

Cheers

well the fav around here i would say is the 3910 or 868i at present.
I bet there have been more of those sold than anything, more so in the USA where these two seem really popular. behind that i would say the OPPOdigital (DVI) is a big seller, with its small price big picture and i think the S97 sold well once reduced.

And if were honest it needs an external video processor because without one things are not that great. IMHO.

I don't have a scaler with my DV29, and have it connected via HDMI, 480p/576p, to my Screenplay 5700 projector and IMHO, it looks amazing. But then again, it is my DVD player, and I'd paid for it, so I would say that

I think we've come up with a cracking short list, ones anyone wanting to buy a HDMI player should consider auditioning

Not sure about the technology but we're certain to see a quantum leap in movie/consumer industry's profit margins.

Some guy commented the other day how "sickeningly" close the Pio 575 looked to his A1XV.

Pound-for-pound I'd love to find the player which out-boxes the Oppo.

I am more than happy to put the more expensive Onkyo 1000 up against the A1XV, again,...... best built player I have found to date as well.

Now resident on the rack...a universal I like at last

Hi

Put the Denon DVD3910 at the top of your list.. It easily beats those recommended here ( apart from the A1XV ) in my opinion
You wouldn't need a scaler with the Denon either. It's just an awesome machine

In my view HD/DVD won't be any more successful than S-VHS or Laserdisc was

Goodluck with your short list though

Does anyone else use the DV29 (or similar) with the Sony KDFE50?

All the above is very interesting, but would the above list apply to me?

I'm after a DVD player to go into my ScanHD and then into a Panny HD6. neither the scaler of the Plasma have HDMI.

Becasue of the lack of HDMI and because i have a scaler is it really worth paying £1000 for a DVD over say £400

cheers

martin

as long as its interlaced output via component is pretty clean then NO, there would not be much advantage as the HD will be doing the grunt work.

PJTX100
opp digital and denon 3910 = exact same picture. they both look identical so thats a great budget dvd player, and if you just want a decent pic, thats the one i would pick of the two as it does a couple of things better now its had the new firmware update.

And yes they all are in the same ballpark in real terms, at the end of it, DVD is limited to a certain resolution, you can only do so much with it. With the A1xv its the complete lack of artifacts thats quite impressive. almost every dvd player i have seen have struggled with quite a few torture scenes. Its a pleasant surprise when the A1XV just Gives a fantastic picture without the niggles. its not always perfect but most of the time.

interesting thread.
I've just sent my 3rd 3910 back after more problems and this time the shop said choose somthing else. the 3910 would be a good player if it were reliable, but it's reliability is on a par with a ten year old skoda.
not trying to get into an argument get a working 3910 and you have a great player.

had a pioneer in the past and the CUE bug was a big issue as i run a pj for display.
so at the moment a don't have a player and on friday i'm off to superfi to demo a dv79 and dv29.
what do you guys think of these machines for quality and value.
could really do with some help here to
thanx guys.
