I have a denon 2910 dvd player, what is the correct black level setting I should be using on this player. 0 ire or 7.5 ire?

IIRC 0 IRE (digital 0/255) is black for a digital PC interface (like DVI), and 7.5 IRE (digital 16/255) is black for a video interface (like HDMI). You should use what the display requires - probably 7.5 IRE. What does the display manual say for the interface you are using?

hi,

I have no had a chance to read the manual, i am at work at the mo. I am using component inputs at the moment. I have also read somewhere that pal uses 0 ire and ntsc uses 7.5 ire. does this make any sense?

0 IRE should work best for you since that way the black level will be the same for both PAL and NTSC (since PAL is always 0 IRE). The way to tell is to check for a shift in black level when switching between PAL and NTSC.
It's not related to the 0-255/16-235 DVI thing BTW.
The 7.5 IRE 'setup' is a historic part of the NTSC analogue video specification dating back to the 1950s when 'flyback' lines on CRTs could be a problem, requiring an offset between 'black' and 'blanking' levels. PAL never had this because display technology had improved somewhat by the time the specification was written.

For the record, black is 7.5 IRE only for NTSC US. For NTSC Japan is also 0 IRE.

You may need 7.5 ire for DVI/HDMI to pass BTB, which is the ability to see the THX shadow on the THX logo on the THX setup found on things like Finding Nemo, Incredibles etc.; or to be able to see 3rd bar on pluge pattern on DVE setup disc.

E.g. with my 3910 to my Infocus 7205 projector via HDMI I don't get Blacker Than Black, ie no shadow appears on THX logo. When I switch to 7.5 ire I can then pass BTB - shadow can be seen on THX etc. I then have to rebalance brightness & contrast using either DVE or THX setup.

Apologies if I should be posting this to a separate thread, but I thought it was along the same lines....

Can anyone tell me the difference between the formats on the Denon 2910 and which I should be using to connect via HDMI to a Pioneer 435?
Options are:

HDMI Y Cb Cr
or
HDMI R G B

I'm using the Y Cb Cr (to be honest, haven't noticed any difference when switching between them).

In theory Y Cb Cr should be slightly better since this is how the video is on the disc, so using this will avoid a conversion of YCbCr > RGB and then back again in the display. In practice it is unlikely you will notice any difference between the 2.
