Empire Direct currently have Denon 1920 for £180. Region 2 but easily hacked.

Horny you know why...........It the latest fad its cool and it makes such a difference.....

I also fib sometimes

Seriously I have tried 5 players recently and the best so far was a Denon2200 which does not have HDMI but a very good prog scan component output.
A Sony NS92v into my panny PV500 looked richer and just as good as the HDMI output! The high end Pioneer machines along with the Arcam DV79 do look superior to a degree that is obvious but cost a lot more.

Try before you buy! Not always easy but worth seeking out a dealer that will let you take a demo model home.

I'm due to get a demo of a SnaZio player next week and will post the results.

I would definately go for the Denon 1920. I picked it up for £200 multi-region which i feel was a complete steal.

The picture through HDMI is breathtaking on my Panasonic LCD. I saw the same film (Star Wars Episode 3) on an LCD TV in store but using Scart and even that have a great picture.

I would definately recommend the 1920. You will NOT be dissapointed

Empire Direct are doing it for £179. I was put of by the lyp sync issues people were having and macroblocking. However I have a Panasonic pv500 plasma and Lee_Cooper has your screen so he is in a better position to advise on a specific machine. Lip sync issues and macroblocking put me off but may not bother your LCD.

I got a local store in my town to Pricematch Richer Sounds who said they would do it for £200.

I have it connected to the screen below and have it connected via the HDMI (and to my amp). I have not had ANY issues with Lip Sync or anything else for that matter.

So current TV cant utilise the wonder that is HDMI.......New one might but then you'll need it for real HD material with HDCP that HAS to use HDMI (and with an Alis panel progressive scan is useless in most respects!) So no dont buy one becuase it has HDMI buy a good one if happens to have HDMI so be it but dont expect it to look any better than component! Get good component Denon 2900 Arcam DV89 etc and it will pee all over a £4000 HDMI machine, and the reason Arcams DV79 is so revereed is that ability to output 576i and 480i over the HDMi connection to an external scaler digitally without the need to SDi modify the player.......(expensive and voiding warranty, Arcam is also a class sounding bit of kit if you have the gear to hear it properly)

why not spend even less and get the Samsung HD 950 or 1 of their other HDMI models all selling for £100 ish, like Horny Dragon said, a £1000+ DVD player outputting progressive scan like the Arcam DV88+ that I have will nearly always look better than a cheap HDMI player so why spend more than a ton on one, at least that way when the ultimate HDMI player is released you can buy that instead and chuck your £100 player on e-bay after!!!

PRojectors are slightly different as they tend to have crap analogue processing and do better on a digital feed the point is HDMI doesnt guarentee better picture i agree it can be better but thats in the minoirty of cases.....(sorry i cant tell from your screens shots if its any better or not)
as for the budget Arcam DV78 £500 DV88 £350 and DV89 £550 (can probably get them down much closer to budget) http://www.badaweb.co.uk/showsearch.php

If you use a tabbed based browser and switch between the images and you will see the difference. First one is HDMI, second Component, third Scart RGB. No settings changed on the PJ.

In that case its a pointless comparison...........without adjusting the display device to match the source input all you see is what the defualt settings (or user adjusted settings) prefer..................the PJ needs to be calibrated for each input, and were you outputting the same siganl on all 3 occaisions?ie 480i or 480p or 720p? because if RGB scart was 576i (what does your DVD player do to NTSC on scart????) and component 480p and HDMI 720p you are comparing 3 different signals so hardly the same thing at all...........

The HDMI connection has an auto setting for upscaling which let's the display device do the upscaling. I presume the signal coming from the player over HDMI would have been 480i. For component it would also have been 480i since upscaling isn't supported via component on my player. As for Scart, I can only guess that it was also 480i since it was an NTSC source. To sum it up, the 3 pics are 480i signals being upscaled to 720p by my AE700 projector.

But now, I've taken this thread OT. Sorry.

VEry very very few DVD players offer 480i or 576i most default to progressive as intelaced 480 and 576 is not included in the HDMI spec. And Auto setting whats that all about you have no idea whats its doing...... and does it output a 50 or 60Hz NTSC source 60Hz but PAL REgion 2 DVD player what does it output, and changing from 480i to 480p isnt scaling up or otherwise its de-interlacing....

Hi Andy

If you search the DVD Hacks forum for the 1920, you will see Stuart Wright's thread on the subject.

It's a firmware hack, but it's easy and it works.

Cheers
John

I tried an Oppo DVD player to see what all the fuss was about and in my humble opinion, I found I preferred the quality of the component picture from my Arcam DV78.

I sold the Oppo shortly after and still have the Arcam.

If you can get a DV78 close to your budget, you should audition it.

Sorry for butting in but I've been lurking around for a few days looking at the threads on DVD players. My question is, HornyDragon, where can I find an Arcam DVD player at the prices you are quoting .
